Cos the smallest advert is 100 pixels, thats $100, some of those ads cost $5000, thats 5000 pixels, so they are of a relatively decent size, and these companies most thing its worth it.

Bear in mind that you're spending $100 to put an advertisement with a direct link to your site, that will be active for at least 5 years, on a site that will attract people. Businesses are relying more and more on this kinda stuff instead of TV/print advertising.

Of course he needs traffic. How do you expect people to buy pixels on his site if nobody's visiting it?

I imagine he's bringing in traffic by word of mouth. I saw the site on Wikipedia, so I posted the link here and sent it to some friends. People will see the link and post it on other sites/send it to their friends. Viral marketing.
