Marxman were a Marxist hip-hop group with two MCs. Their lyrics expounded socialism and an end to economic and social injustice. Their first single "Sad Affair" caused particular controversy for vocalling support for the republican struggle in Northern Ireland, predominantly led by Sinn Fein, the political wing of the then Provisional IRA.
The band was signed to Talkin' Loud/Polygram and A&M in the United States. Amongst their achievements The band performed their single All About Eve, a song portraying a tragic story of espousal abuse, on the BBC's popular music program Top of the Pops. Their second single Ship Ahoy guested the evocative vocals of Sin?ad O'Connor, in a song depicting parallels in the African slave trade and present day wage-slavery.
Their ability to express intelligent social commentary via a unique musical blend led to their touring with U2 and Depeche Mode on their respective tours

The band, created in London (1989), was made up of college friends and hip-hop enthusiasts from Bristol MC's Hollis Byrne (H) and Stephen Brown (MC Phrase). Responsible for the bands concept and development they dared to air an overtly political voice in a time dominated by Gangsta rap and political apathy. Hollis' childhood friend from Ireland, Oisin Lunny, was enrolled as the bands official third member. Together they produced an eclectic and unique blend of Bristol ghetto-ambience, predominantly inspired by New York Hip-Hop, Motown Soul, and the distinct melodies of traditional Irish compositions.
After recording and releasing two Albums 33 Revolutions Per Minute, Time Capsule and a mini-LP Whassint For The Cynic the band called an end to the project in 1995..
