Caution over HIV 'cure' claims

Doctors say they want to investigate the case of a British man with HIV who apparently became clear of the virus.

Andrew Stimpson, 25, was diagnosed HIV-positive in 2002 but was found to be negative in October 2003 by Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust.

Mr Stimpson, from London, said he was "one of the luckiest people alive".

The trust said the tests were accurate but were unable to confirm Scotsman Mr Stimpson's cure because he had declined to undergo further tests.

A statement from the trust said: "This is a rare and complex case. When we became aware of Mr Stimpson's HIV negative test results we offered him further tests to help us investigate and find an explanation for the different results.

I think I'm one of the luckiest people alive Andrew StimpsonBacteria modified to fight HIV "So far Mr Stimpson has declined this offer."

A trust spokeswoman added: "We urge him, for the sake of himself and the HIV community, to come in and get tested.

"If he doesn't feel that he can come to Chelsea and Westminster then he should please go to another HIV specialist."

'Miracle'

There have been anecdotal accounts before from Africa of people shaking off the HIV virus.

Mr Stimpson, who is originally from Largs in Ayrshire, said: "There are 34.9 million people with HIV globally and I am just one person who managed to control it, to survive from it and to get rid of it from my body.

"For me that is unbelievable - it is a miracle. I think I'm one of the luckiest people alive."

Mr Stimpson told the News of the World and Mail on Sunday that he became depressed and suicidal after being told he was HIV-positive but remained well and did not require medication.

Further tests

Some 14 months later he was offered another test by doctors, which came back negative.

He sought compensation but has apparently been told there is no case to answer because there was no fault with the testing procedure.

He has told the papers he would do anything he could to help find a cure.

Deborah Jack, chief executive of the National Aids Trust, said: "This appears to be a highly unusual case and without further tests it is impossible to draw any conclusions for people living with HIV.

"The virus is extremely complex and there are many unknowns about how it operates and how people's bodies react to it.

"Therefore, if this case were able to shed further light, it could be extremely valuable for research into treatments or a cure."

Vaccine clue

Aids expert Dr Patrick Dixon, from international Aids group Acet, said the case was "very, very unusual".

"I've come across many anecdotal reports of this kind of thing happening in Africa, some quite recently, but it's difficult to verify them," he told BBC News 24.

"You have to be rock-solid sure that both samples came from the same person, no mix-up in the laboratory, no mistakes in the testing, etc.

"This is the first well-documented case."

He said the case was important because "inside his immune system is perhaps a key that could allow us to develop some kind of vaccine".

Let me be the first one to say I call bullshit in this. I think he never had the HIV virus and it was a medical/lab error. I call bullshit because he does not want to participate in further studies to examine him and see what causes the virus to die. I hope this guy re-evaluates his opinion and does go for further studies to help further the fight against the HIV/AIDS virus. Only time will tell.

i was about to say the same thing , sound like someone made a mistake when diagnosing him.

what kind of person, that understands this virus, would not want to help out the other people who are suffering?

This is very interesting. I'd like to hear more about this. I'd call bullshit, too, but I work with a man who is HIV positive who has a nearly similar case. The guy was diagnosed well over 10 years ago and he participates in studies over at Georgetown because he has some sort of rare reaction to the virus. While he does have the virus, it does not effect his immune system beyond a minimal extent (which requires few shots every year) and has not progressed since being diagnosed.
But that's just one thing, this guy in this article is a miracle if true. Something's fishy though. I don't think he was misdiagnosed unless the doctors were in it somehow. It just doesn't make sense to not want to help.

I really hope it's true, and it's not out of the question, because it could go a long way towards developing a vaccine.

I would have written this off as a lab error too, but I'm not sure. The article says the tests were definitely not faulty. I suppose they could be mistaken, or that it could be an excuse not to pay compensation, but I'm not sure.

The guy has change his mind and said he will help now. Another interesting bit of info is that his boyfriend, (don't say you didn't know!) who he contracted it off initially, and him have been having unprotected sex since he was diagnosed (obviously thought they had nothin to lose) and he's still in the clear, meaning he must be now be immune.

So you think he never had it, but you think he should go for further studies to help further the fight against HIV/AIDS?

I believe he never did had it, but as always it is just an opinion. I hope that I am wrong and with further tests it will prove that if I am right or wrong on it.

A person that comes to mine right now is Magic Johnson. How many years has he had the HIV virus? Like 12 or so and it never or hasn't progressed to the AIDS virus. Some of my frineds say that he doesn't have the HIV virus alltogether.

Medicine for HIV has come a long way. People can live decades with the virus without progression. People who come up with conspiracy theories about that don't know a thing about HIV/AIDS. I know another person who has the virus and was diagnosed about 20 years ago. Unfortunately, he has taken almost all medicine available and has become immune to them so almost nothing works for him now except about 2 or 3 more medications. So when his body becomes immune to that, well yeah, you get the idea. On the other hand, some people do not need medicine because their immune system doesn't require much of it to fight it so they are lucky because they probably won't become immune to ANY medicine and live a full life like a normal person.

Even a deadly virus can't withstand the harsh conditions of a British man.

Lol!

He properly cured it by a combination of binge drinking regulary on friday, saturday, sunday and wednesday night, getting into fights regulary and eating an incredibly poor diet :) it's good to be British,

On a serious note, I hope to god that this is no mistake, on the news yesterday they were talking about reports about a decade ago that some HIV sufferers in africa had miracurosely become clear from it and they were saying that no one believed it because of the fact that it happened in africa and they couldn't confirm it, so this geezer wouldn't be the first and now maybe they can do some serious research on this, and take it seriously,
Myself I wouldn't get my hopes up but, It is not totally unbelievable, it's part of evolution, just as bacteria can evolve to resist drugs (mrsa) the human immune system can also adapt to combat diseases

Just wanted to give you guys/gals the conclusion of this story. And it is that I was right after all. He did not have the HIV virus the clinic botched it up...
Miracle HIV patient didn't have virus

LONDON, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- The British clinic that initially told a man his body had rid itself of HIV now says the man did not have the virus in the first place.

"It is probably there was never any evidence of him having the HIV virus," the Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust admitted. "We don't know exactly what happened.

The clinic initially told Andrew Stimpson, 25, of London, he had contracted the virus that causes AIDS and later told him that by some miracle, his body had rid itself of the disease.

Stimpson said Wednesday he had lost "all confidence" in the clinic, the Mirror reported.
