But the singer has issued a terse statement claiming that the story is nothing but a lie.
Breaking her silence for the first time since the allegations were made by her ex-husband's brother, Young Debarge, Janet issued a statement to TV show Access Hollywood.
"I do not have a child and all allegations saying so are false," she said.
Janet, 39, was married to James Debarge, a singer in former R&B outfit Debarge, for three months in 1984 when she was just 18.
The allegations that the couple have an 18-year-old daughter, Renee, were made on New York radio show Hot 97 when Young Debarge was promoting his album.
He claimed the girl was brought up by Janet's older sister, Rebbie.
Loose lips sink ships, they say, so Debarge should beware: the Jackson family lawyer has now entered the fray.
Brian Oxman said the story first emerged a few years ago and that he had asked his client if it was true.
He said: "The answer is no way, no how. From the sisters to the mother, every last one of them said it never happened."
