This is coming from somebody who liked the Miami Vice movie, so take my opinion for what it's worth, but I loved Idlewild. Very well-done movie, eccentric and weird, for sure, but it never felt forced or corny, IMO. It definitely was more a film than a vanity piece (IE Purple Rain), and Brian Barber did a great job directing.

The funny thing is, Andre was always the "wannabe actor" of the two, but Big Boi did the better job here. Andre's story was the more somber of the two, and he just couldn't effectively show emotion. He just got the "deer in the headlights" look whenever the camera zoomed in on him. Big Boi, on the other hand, was funny when he needed to be, read his lines well, showed the correct emotion when the scene called for it, and held his own with Terrence Howard, which is hard as hell to do.

Ving Rhames wasn't in the movie as much as I would have liked, and a few of the better songs from the soundtrack were nowhere to be found (there were a LOT of Speakerboxxx/Love Below songs in the movie, though), but this movie was very well done. It doesn't really end on the best of notes, though, which kinda threw me off, so be prepared if you go to see it.

I thought Big Boi acted better too, Andre tries to act too much, the clock scene whatever was tight though. Movie was real good though, a lot better than I was expecting.

Purple Rain wasn't a vanity project. Now Graffiti Bridge, on the other hand...
