that ad is stupid, i know loads of Dutch people that speak English, many speak it better than most English people. They learn it at school, I have no doubt Chronics english is superb.
Still most people in non-english speaking countries (I don't count countries like Sweden or Norway where English is their second official language) don't speak English at all, while 1/4 (mostly in cities) know just basics. There's still a minority of people in places like my country, most other European countries, African (except colonies), Asian countries (I won't even count Japan where 97% of people including youth don't even know the basics) who can use english quite fluently.
Yeah they teach english in schools.. in our high schools basic groups are taught what does words "hi", "apple" or "car" mean, english alphabet, basic grammar and that's all.
There are small groups in most schools learning more advanced stuff, in some schools even really hard english but as I said they are still minorities and most of those people won't ever speak english fluently. Also people here don't use english at all. I may know hard english words, I may be good at grammar but I won't ever speak as fluently as you guys who use your english all the time every day as "a tool to survive" - because it's your main and usually only language (no offense).

I suck especially in grammar, I often forget basic things.
I've been studying English since I was 4.
I studied in American school, English school and took many additional lessons with English teachers.
I stopped when I was 16, since then I study by myself.
Also part of my family lives in London.
Thanks, actually it's my second language, my first language is Polish but I also studied Latin and basics of German+French (we have to study that in our schools) and Japanese (I plan to study in a Polish-Japanese college, I also had Japanese Karate sensei so I had to understand those basics)

In theory that's also how it works here.. except that in most high schools latin is a must as well as German, French and English.
There are also additional lessons from optional: Spanish, Italian or Russian. Our education system is world's top 4th or 5th but..
The problem is that most people don't want to learn. There are really intelligent people here but unfortunately Polish society is really specific. Also most Poles find learning foreign languages useless - that's probably because of their nationalistic mentality. People know every detail in world's history, geography, every Polish word etc. but don't want to learn foreign languages.
Situation kinda changes now, with every year more people study english mostly because they find other coutries more attractive job-wise but still it's not enough. People are so self confident that they move abroad without any basic knowledge of foreign languages.
I feel alienated here. I enjoy learning different languages and cultures.
I was always the best in class in English considering I'm not that good student overall. I became really lazy but I couldn't live without practicing and learning foreign languages mostly because I couldn't hold that monotony here.
Didn't know the Polish education system had so many options for learning languages. Cool. Maybe someone should tell people it's a huge plus if you want to work abroad or in an international organization. Especially in the business world languages are a good thing to have.

yeah it's a plus but as I said people don't want to learn. In my elementary school we had German on higher level than now in high school because nobody wants to study that.
about Trojans - I had that on history lessons only. On latin it was straight grammar and vocabulary learning.
