Interesting...

For those worried with energy consumption and all its downsides. When your screen is white, be it an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when it’s black it consumes only 59 watts.

Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with lower energy consumption, check it out:

cool site. that has replaced google as my default homepage now.

how is it possible? Cpu and gpu unit doesn't have much more to do when displaying colors. The only good explanation may be display's energy consumption in crt monitors, but most people have lcd's that need same amount of energy, no matter what they display (matrix turns black but backlight flash regardless of what matrix displays). I don't see any good explanation for this.

think about how much energy the world and man kind would have saved if al gore didn't put on live aide with all those hypocrite performers

Think of all the people who might not of known about it that are now doing things.

"Speeches only reaches those who already know about it this is how we go about it"

yea i've heard that response before and i think it's a load of crap. the only people that wouldn't know about global warming in this day in age are ones living in villages in south america that wouldn't see live earth in the first place and people living in africa that still live in the stone age.

live earth was a hyprocritical event full of hypocrites. the events alone wasted more energy and the worlds resources than millions of regular people would ever use up. look up how many trees have to be planted in order to off-set the damage done by live earth.

Forget about all the information they pass out and talk about on how to save energy in your home car etc or how they raise awareness and money for further research. Big time hypocrites though, I mean what are they thinking when they pioneer new ideas and concepts that they use on how to save energy at the concert which then go to be used in the industry, forget that it will change how concerts are put on from now on. Whatever though.

forget that all the crap they handed out ended up on the ground and the venues were litered to death lol read all the articles that came out after the event. it was a complete failure.

rock stars should not tell people how to live their lives

rock stars should not tell people how to live their lives

From one perspective, that's a valid statement. However, the other perspective is that most rock stars have lived a life filled with drugs and law problems; in the eyes of religious folk, they're sinners. So, it would make sense that they'd be able to give advice to people because they know how the "other" side is.

I mean, the NBA doesn't bring in successful gamblers to talk about gambling problems. They bring in "reformed" mobsters.

well, i could agree, but i was talking about rock stars and famous people telling us regular folk to stop waisting energy and the worlds resources while they fly private jets all around the world, own dozens of cars including suv's and live in homes that use more energy than 10 homes us non rich/famous people live in

Rock stars, pop stars and the like don't know shit. They're pretty much just backing a good natured cause such as this just to illustrate their so called "social awareness". Forgive me for being cynical about particular celebrities supporting a cause - but I just don't feel the Pussy Cat Dolls' concern for the environment have any credibility. Just my opinion.
