Getting to Things

I hate when you have something you wanted to get to and it never happens. Like, I wanted to reduce my CD collection. I keep many of them in boxes. So I went through them and picked out about 50 that I might not need anymore. Put them on my floor in a corner, intending to listen to each one and then decide what I want to do with it. Six months later, they're still there gathering dust. Maybe that means I should just throw them out or give them away. Or download them to my computer and then never listen to them there. But this is not about CDs (I also have a box of fucking cassette tapes). It's about wanting to get to things that you don't get to because you don't really want to. Maybe we shouldn't fool ourselves about it and waste time. Just forget your plans for things if you know it's not that important.

What are your experiences with this kind of thing? Besides term papers, which are something assigned by someone else. I'm talking about things you initiated and wanted to get to but don't. And when you eventually do, it's never like you wanted to.

Saving for things is my problem. All ways intend to save up and buy something worthwhile. But other expenses pop up and I never get round to saving and buying what I wanted.

It seems to me that you have more of a "hoarders" problem than anything else. Deep down, if you lost all those CDs tomorrow in a fire, you wouldn't think twice about their importance. But because they're in your possession and you've paid for them, you feel that you owe it to yourself and to society to listen to them and decide their worthiness but you keep putting it off because you feel as if it's a really boring chore. So every day you spend putting it off, you keep getting more bogged down by it. That's because it probably is a big boring chore. Give the CDs away. Make a list of them. If you feel like listening to them at some point in life, Spotify them. I wouldn't give one damn if I lost my TV, my PS3, most of my clothes, all my books and all my DVDs tomorrow. My MacBook and phone are a differen't story, though. But I would be really, really bummed if I lost that paper I wrote in 8th grade English.

Didn't I say this wasn't about CDs? It's about not getting to things you want to get to but don't. I just wanted to reduce my collection a little. I hadn't accumulated them by buying just anything that sounded interesting or was on sale. Everything I have I really liked and listened to many times. It's just as you get older your tastes start to change and what meant a lot at one time no longer does. I assess all my possessions about every three years. If I have no use for it, it goes. But something like music is not as easy to decide. lol, I don't feel I owe society to listen to them. (I don't even understand that.) And I'm not getting more bogged down in them every day. It's just a neat little pile in the corner that I never really notice anymore. I know what you're saying but my CDs are not the case. I don't see it as a big boring chore, it's just something not interesting enough to get to right away. Like maybe cooking is for many people. A lot of people would like to cook more and try recipes, esp if they're trying to eat better. But they usually don't get to it. Seems like too much trouble. It's easier to just make what you're used to. Maybe you want to organize your photos or songs on your computer, but you never really get to it. That's the kind of thing I'm talking about. We want it done, but we never feel like doing it.

I understand what you mean. I'm often like that. I think it's the same mechanism that results in procrastination after all. We would like something done but subconsciously we don't really feel like going through the process itself.

I think that's the first time I saw u curse..
Well, Sofi made me mad. (for sofi: joke, since it was before your post) But I didn't really curse, Sigh. Fucking cassette tapes simply meant tapes of people having intercourse. (Now Sigh is wondering if I actually mean that.)

You should find out where the hipsters hang out and sell them cassette tapes for a premium.

wait, never mind, it's not about casette tapes. :P

lol for real though, I used to have that problem a lot. I found myself in a pattern where I would know my day off would be tomorrow, so i stayed up late and did what i wanted. I stopped that and fell asleep early and then i felt so refreshed on my day off, i got shit done and still enjoyed myself like i stayed up doing other stuff. It really helps doing this at least once every other week or once a month. Things get done.
