I was 300 miles into my trip when I started getting phone calls about how serious the shit was getting. The school (Tulane University) was shutting down - on the first day of freshmen orientation, no less - the city was going to be evacuated, God was going to whip it out and teabag the Garden District, etc.

So I turned around and drove back home. 600 miles worth of gas wasted. I'm mad.

I hope any members in the Gulf area stay safe and/or get the hell out of there.

I don't know when I'll be going back. Classes are scheduled to start back up on Thursday, but if I have to swim to get to Organic Chemistry I won't be back.

The shit's a Category 5 hurricane and it's expected to hit the city directly. Everything could be wiped out.

As of Sunday morning, Katrina has strengthened to Category 5 with winds of 175 mph. As of 8:30 a.m., winds were 160 mph winds. Winds of 155 or greater mark a Category 5 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Katrina is comparable to Hurricane Camille in intensity, which devastated the New Orleans area in 1969; the difference is that Katrina is larger.

The entire Southeastern Louisiana area is under hurricane warning. The area extends from Morgan City eastward to the Alabama/Florida border--including metro New Orleans and Lake Ponchartrain.

With most of Southeastern Louisiana under evacuation orders - voluntary or mandatory - federal forecasts and computer models continued to show deadly Hurricane Katrina on a course that would take it directly over metro New Orleans on Monday. Landfall is expected at 1 p.m. Monday with winds and rain to begin Sunday afternoon.

Mayor Nagin is telling those who need to move to the Superdome to come with enough food for several days and with blankets. He said it will be a very uncomfortable place and encouraged everybody who could to get out.

He also said police and firefighters would spread out throughout the city sounding sirens and using bullhorns to tell residents to get out. Nagin said police would have the authority to comandeer any vehicle or building that could be used for evacuation or shelter.

Hurricanes as powerful as Katrina usually make unpredictable fluctuations in strength, but all the conditions are there for the storm to still be a Category 5 when it hits the coast, said Chris Sisko, a meteorologist at the hurricane center.

"With them sitting well below sea level, this is a potential set up for a catastrophic event that has never been seen before," Sisko said.

President Bush late Saturday declared a state of emergency in Louisiana, following a request earlier by Gov. Kathleen Blanco, a move that frees up federal emergency aid for the storm. Bush also urged residents to follow the advice of forecasters, and flee the storm. He is slated to address the nation at 11:30 this morning.

Also Saturday evening, the head of the National Hurricane Center made a personal call to The Times-Picayune's veteran hurricane beat writer, Mark Schleifstein, to voice his concern about New Orleans. (Read full story)

Across the area, city and parish officials spent the day warning residents to prepare for the storm. At 4 p.m. Saturday, the multistate contraflow plan went into full operations, with outbound interstates turned to one-way roads north and west.

Sunday morning, at a press conference with Governor Blanco and other officials, Mayor Nagin issued a mandatory evacuation for the city of New Orleans. Governor Blanco reported that I-10 is gridlocked to Kenner and urged residents to use alternate routes, such as highway 61, highway 90, and I-10 east.

The Superdome is being used as a shelter of last resort for people who have no cars, with city bus pick-up points around New Orleans.

Katrina, the 11th named storm of a busy season, crossed Florida on Thursday.
Nine deaths were blamed on the storm. Much of the seven hours Katrina spent over land Thursday was over the moist Everglades, allowing for only slight weakening.

This is going to be a crazy Hurricane. New Orleans might not be New Orleans after this. Isn't something like 70% of New Orleans under sea level. They are predicting a 28 ft. storm surge, how crazy is that. I think this might have those amst damage from any hurricane ever, the last category 5, i think it was Andrew maybe did something like 28 billion in damages, this will be huge too. Sucks for you and school though.

I never thought I could sit and watch the Weather Channel for so long.

My heart's breaking, thinking of all of the people who won't be able to make it out. I hope this doesn't turn into the modern Pompeii.

Last year, we were joking around saying "We don't run from hurricanes, we drink them", but (maybe I've watched too much disaster-hungry news today) now I just don't know what's going to happen and I'm a tiny bit worried.

I've never been in a situation where I knew the next 24-48 hours could change my life.

Nah man people should of learned from the last hurricane, HOPEFULLY. This is going to be a serious incident no doubt about it but i'm just hopin no lives are taken. Hopefully it iwll all be property damage, they have like 1-2 days to get out so im hopin people do.
