Rapper Foxy Brown was handcuffed and threatened with jail after she stuck her tongue out at a New York judge who asked her to stop chewing gum.

Judge Melissa Jackson told the singer, whose real name is Inga Marchand, she had showed disrespect to the court. While she was being handcuffed, Ms Marchand shouted at a court officer and, Judge Jackson said, hit her. Ms Marchand is expected to plead guilty to assaulting two nail salon workers during a row over payment. The guilty plea is expected to come as part of a plea bargaining deal, which would enable her to get a non-custodial sentence. But the deal has hit a snag, apparently because the judge is not satisfied with Ms Marchand's plea statement.

As Judge Jackson set a date of 23 January for Ms Marchand, 25, to return, she said to the rapper's lawyer Joseph Fleming: "Counsel, she has gum in her mouth."

Mr Fleming denied his client was chewing gum, and told the judge the rapper could not hear her. She has been diagnosed with sudden hearing loss.

Ms Marchand opened her mouth and wagged her tongue as if to show her mouth was empty. Judge Jackson ordered the rapper to be handcuffed to the defendants' bench. But a row erupted with the court officer, with Ms Marchand complaining the bangles and bracelets on her left wrist were "in the way".

The judge gave Ms Marchand two chances to apologise, or face a $1,000 fine for contempt of court. After a second meeting with her lawyer, Ms Marchand apologised.

Prosecutors allege Ms Marchand, with a mobile phone in her closed fist, attacked and kicked one nail bar worker, and hit a second worker in the face in the incident in August 2004. Under a plea deal discussed at her last court appearance, she would have pleaded guilty to misdemeanour assault and served 10 days' community service.

Ms Marchand, who has recorded with Jay-Z and Method Man, scored a US number one with her Chyna Doll album in 1999.
