i dont like flying,not because im scared but everytime i get in a plane,people always give me weird looks.i gave it alot of thought,and i still cant figure out why

that's a bloated statistic. here's why...

cars travel at variable rates of speed. most car accidents are not high impact and usually result in minor injury as opposed to fatality. air crashes are high impact and usually complete fatality.

so yeah, i'd rather be in a car accident than a plane accident. likewise i wouldn't mind getting in a few dozen as opposed to one plane accident.

would you rather be in a dozen 35 mph accidents into poles or other cars or one say going 300 mph into the side of a mountain?

there are more car crashes than plane crashes, but plane crashes are more catastrophic. there are also billions more vehicular trips than plane trips, so with both of these factors at play comparing them is like apples and oranges.

actually i believe its 1 in 11 million for aircraft. flying is much safer then driving, now of course airline crashes are more catastrophic BUT they also dont happen that often thats why whenever it does its front page news. Aircraft malfunction daily but its rare that those malfucntions result in crashes, compare that to your cars brakes failing while on the interstate doing 70, odds are your either gonna be maimed for life or killed. Now brakes fail on aircraft you still have flaps an reverse thrusters that will slow you down an eventually stop you, anyway the odds of you being envolved in a aircraft disaster are minimal compared to daily driving, yeah planes crash but its not as often as the media would have you think.

it's simply not a fair comparison.

commercial airplanes are given set plotted routes and are tracked by gps and radar by outside parties. this affords a few safety measures impossible in a motor vehicle. off the top:

1. if the airplane drifts off course, the plane's onboard system will alert the pilot, also the radar trackers of course.
2. planes are given a radius of no fly surrounding their intended path and time/place relationship. cars are packed in as tightly as they can be.
3. motor vehicle accidents are often the result of inattention and carelessness. cockpits typically have a minimum of two to three pilots/navigators to check and re-check each other.
4. drunk flying is theoretically impossible by today's post-9/11 standards.

...and this is just off the cuff. it's an unfair comparison without establishing common denominators based upon frequency and variance matching. flying may appear to be safer than driving, but in reality any time you travel at speeds required by a machine you are at heightened risk.

To me the biggest problem about flying is that if youre on an 8 hour flight, you know you have to sit down for 8 hours and cant get out until the plane has landed.

BTW: always ask if the row of seats next to the emergency exit is still available, you have much more space for your legs if you sit there

I never used to be scared. Until last year. I have been on a plane 10 times so far this year. I have used valium and alcohol.

The first flight this year I was so scared I dropped 6 5mg tabs of valium and drunk 3 whiskies. I am a little suprised I didn't OD.

I am now better and fly withough valium or alchohol again.

Some flights give you free drinks, British Airways are 1, and most long flights supply a "free" meal and drinks. But shorter, and especially domestic flights expect you to pay.
