A Morgan Park High School teacher has been suspended after police said they found her "half naked'' in a car with a 17-year-old student.
The teacher was identified as Mariama Buchanan, 27, of the 9700 block of South Prospect, who was hired to teach English at Morgan Park just last February. It was reportedly her first teaching job. The male student is a member of the school's highly rated football team. Chicago Police have charged both with public indecency, a misdemeanor.
"The teacher was reassigned to administrative duty off-campus as soon as we learned of the incident," CPS spokesman Michael Vaughn said Thursday. He said CPS is investigating the incident.
"Our main concern is for the student and the school community. We will take the appropriate disciplinary action when the investigation has been completed," he said.
Police arrested and charged the teacher and student on Monday, after officers found the two inside a parked car, undressed, around 7 p.m. Police said they were called to the 600 block of West Englewood on a complaint of a "suspicious vehicle."
"Police arrived and saw them both half naked in the car. They were removed from the car and charged accordingly," Pat Camden, a police spokesman said.
What's next
Morgan Park High School officials said they are seeking counseling for the football player.
"We of course will continue to work with the student and his family to provide the appropriate counseling and support services," Morgan Park Principal Charles Alexander said Thursday.
Alexander confirmed for students and teachers Thursday the rumor that had been swirling at the school all week, and in a note sent home with students, sought to reassure Morgan Park parents that their students were safe at the school.
"The incident happened far from the school's campus, and was in no way related to any school-sponsored activity or program," he wrote.
If the allegations are true, the only disciplinary options under the CPS Employee Discipline Code are firing and/or criminal prosecution, under section 5-10 prohibiting "soliciting, commanding, urging, inciting or requesting a sexual act of a student; or intentionally or knowingly engaging in any sexual conduct or act with a student."
The teacher and student are scheduled to appear in court on the misdemeanor charge on March 24.
Morgan Park's football team is highly regarded as a class 7A state semifinalist last season, and the best in the Chicago Public League. Several seniors have signed with Division I schools.
