Technology cool linux video

nice... so it was about 12 years old when i was introduced to it.

just reminds me of how cynical we all were of it back in school, because we loved what was already there for us (i.e. windows) and looked no further. there was no questioning microsoft at that age. that was all we knew back then. but that all changed when my school went open source and i saw the possibilities demonstrated in IT class. since then, i've supported alternatives - linux and ubuntu although my knowledge on those is still no way near as much with windows.

There's a lot of propaganda there though, like it was so revolutionary and innovative and that Linus is so awesome.
It's mostly Richard Stallman and Free Software Foundation who are to thank. Linus Torvalds is not much more to open software than Steve Jobs is. Most Linux builds are technically Linux just because the OSF went the wrong way with time, while Linux foundation evolved. Most "Linux" builds were built on GNU systems and named "linux" just because their manufacturers didn't like OSF's manifest. It sucks that it's Linus who gets all the hype though, since he only "tweaked" GNU and made a choice that OSF didn't want to do - went mainstream.

Well for me the point of FOSS stuff like Linux is totally that there are thousands of awesome people that make it what it is and for each flavor you've got core teams working on stuff, like Canonical for Ubuntu, and Google for Android, but while those core teams lead the way, anybody is free to contribute. So for me all it's really saying is that Linus originated a system that became great because of so many other people taking his baton and running with it.

Yeah but in the first place he took the baton from FSF/OSF and GNU. Google started a brand new OS based on a "Linux" core. But the Linux core was essentially just a tweaked GNU one with an entirely new name and a new manifest which was just a tad different from the GNU one. I really think that Linux is awesome but that Linus dude is way overhyped since he didn't do much, that's all I'm saying.

You never fucked with a BBC or Acorn RiscOs machine? WTF! Id learnt how to write programs in BASIC before I joined secondary school because of these machines.
