My laptop has been having some serious problems lately. For example, I would be online, no problem, and the computer would just freeze. Another example, I would be online, no problem, and all of a sudden, some blue screen pops up with a lot of error messages and restarts. Another example, I download something and the program asks me if it has permission to restart my computer and I say yes. Then, the computer shuts down instead of restarting. I got an error report from Microsoft saying that it could be due to overheating, something about the RAM, and something else. I didn't have a chance to bookmark it. However, I bookmarked the resolution they gave me: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=842465

Now, it could be due to over-heating, as it seems like it heats up too much. What can I do to fix this?

Try cleaning your fan out it might be burning itself out due to dust/muck wrapped around the spindle :confused: a compressed air can should shift it (do laptops even have processor fans? or do they have them metal things screwed onto them to disribute heat?) or shorting out hows your power supply? not spilt any liquids down it have u?
 
It sounds like a hard drive or CPU problem to me. What are you running? Have you scanned your harddrive for errors? Have you ran virus and spyware programs? When did the problem first occur? You can always download and burn this cd.

Burn it and boot from cd and use the hard drive diagnostic tools to run hard drive checks. You can check everything by using this cd. Memory, CPU, hard drive, peripherals, antivirus tools.

Compaq Presario 1500. It's 2 1/2 years old.

I don't think it has a fan, like a literal fan. I don't know how my power supply is. To check out any of the things you mentioned, I would have to unscrew my whole laptop and open it up. Also, I have not spilled any liquids.

What do you mean what am I running? I haven't scanned my hd for errors, but I ran virus and spyware programs and it's all clean. Also, this was before I rebooted my computer totally, and it's happening again. So, it's not spyware or a virus. The problems occured like a couple of weeks ago, and I rebooted today, and same problems keep appearing.
 
I meant what kinda computer but I see now. You should use that cd and it will tell you where the problems are. Also, you could check the device manager. Window key+ break>hardware>device manager and see if you have any errors. I have a compac 1200 series and it only lasted a year until I have to replace the hard drive. Then six months later it was having problems again so its just been sitting under the bed for months. Laptops are a bitch and so hard to fix or repair.
 
most likely a virus. i recently had a virus,and i checked out the error message that my computer was giving me.it was a cpu problem.BUT turned out it was really a virus.i formatted the hard drive and its working perfectly fine.

you can usually spot hardware defects when you first get your computer.laptop components getting damaged later on is rare,unless it takes some physical abuse.

i suggest you first give it a clean format and re-install windows.if that works then fine,if it doesnt then you can troubleshoot hardware.but getting clean software first will really tell you whats up.if you go on playing with the hardware now,you have to look at many different components and its next to impossible to determine what it is since laptop components cant be changed easily.
 
it is also possible your hard disk is damaged by over-heating, my fan wasn't working at all for a while, and my laptop started to freeze and i got a blue screen. this happenned many times, and i found out a program which forces my fan to work..but it was to late for the HD, it was dead...now ive got a new hd + always working fan, and everything is good

I would do that, but, I'd have to open up my laptop totally. I just see these 3 metal bars with space in between them where the heat is coming out. I'm thinking of contacting somebody more knowledgable to open up the laptop and check it out.
 
2 years old and you think of openining it up? Not a very good idea. It's probably a software issue. It couldn't be a hardware issue. Try using the computer's restoration cd's that come with it. Maybe you need to restore all the orginal files. try cleaning your hard drive. try all the diagnositic programs that are in your computer.
 
check for virus if u havent done so and just go through step bye step checking off wat doesnt work when u feel overwhelmed take it in tosomeone most of the time they dont do shit unless its one of thos people who specialize in computers and no what theyre doing

I restored the computer completely, so I know it's not that. For example, when I turn on my laptop and work on it, I can't hear it at all, nor the fan. When the computer freezes, the fan turns on and it makes a sorta loud noise. I'm pretty sure it's the fan over-heating due to dust or something, I just don't know how to fix that.

Blue screens in windows xp or windows 2000 are usually related to hardware errors... most commonly RAM and Hard disk drives, I suggest you boot your computer with the windows xp/2000 CD inserted.. enter the recovery console by pressing "R" when prompted and login... from there type the following

CHKDSK /R

this may take a while... if your hard disk contains errors which it most probably does... then it could take anywhere between 1hr and 2 hrs.. at times it may appear to be frozen... but it is not... whatever you do... do NOT shutdown or hold your power button once this has started as it is reading and writing directly from/to the hard disk, and it will create more sevier errors.

second thing.. if its the RAM, then it probably means ur ram chips are fucked. In this case i'd prolly just buy some new ram chips and put them in... there should b a latch at the bottom of the laptop to do this.... its not hard.

third thing.. it could be your fan... maybe its worn out or its come unplugged or something... check to see if its active... it might be very dirty aswell as i saw posted earlier, as dust accumulates and slows or halts the spinning... cleaning it might help.

i had the power supply problem on my computer back in 03.. my computer would just turn off on me.. eventually after about a week of the shyt doing that.. i took it to my computer class and plugged it up with the computer shell off... press power and the power supply started smoking from the dust/dirt build up... i ended up stealing a power supply that was just laying around class lol.. it was too big for the computer but it did the trick
