Anyone here taking it at the college level? I have a hard time with this subject mainly because the questions im asked on the exam test my concept knowledge through math problems. I cant just memorize formulas and stoichiometric problems and then apply them to different numbers i actually have to understand what the hell the question is even asking me to do first.

im not liking this one bit although i must say i enjoy learning about chemistry. i find it fun, i wish i was smarter in math though so it would come easier.

Have you got a good grasp of Dimensional Analysis? Conversions and all that? That just requires practice.

I suggest you find (library or ebay/Amazon): Essential Math for Chemistry Students by David W. Ball. 175 pg walk-through of all the math you'll need to know with lots of examples to practice on.

What textbook are you using? Give me the authors' name. I'll tell you how it compares to other ones. I read chemistry textbooks as a pastime. Seriously, I've gone through about 40 current ones.

Some textbooks go into the complex stuff too soon for many people. It usually helps to read through a more basic text first. I could recommend one and you could get the last edition used on ebay for about $10. But what have they got you using?

wow dude u really read them for fun? thats actually pretty cool...like i said before i really enjoy chemistry, i just have a hard time deciphering through the fluff of a question and understand what they are actually asking me to do. it doesnt help that my instructor insists on making every exam as challenging as possible so that class averages are in the 60s. Im using General Chemistry 4th edition by hill, petrucci, mccreary, and perry. i also have Chemistry: The Central Science (10th Edition) by Theodore E Brown, H. Eugene LeMay, and Bruce E Bursten at home bec a friend gave it to me. I find the latter book to be much easier to read..however the types of problems on my exam are much more similiar to the first books challenging questions.

is anyone else scratching their head at jokerman reading chemistry books for a hobby
yeah honestly jokerman has weird hobbies..

i hate chemisty. failed it in my last year of high school. also failed maths tho, one doesn't go without the other i guess.

Yeah, you'd think Jokerman would be putting whoopee cushions in people's seats, or out playing doorbell ditch, or perhaps shooting unsuspecting victims in the eye with his squirt gun disguised as a flower pinned to his shirt.

A pastime, not a hobby!

My hobby is reading physics books. Just get it straight, okay. Trying to make me look strange.

No, I go out and pull down girls' pants, then run. I give them presents and a jack-in-the-box pops out.

When I grow up, I want to be like Jokerman.

Props on taking Chem in college, though. I see lots of people struggling with it. Asians, too. ASIANS! The FOB "I love NY" shirt-wearing ones, man. Good luck with that.

Very familiar with both. Yes, the Petrucci one is tougher. The Central Science is one of the best General texts. One text that's between Petrucci and Central is Chemistry by Martin S. Silberberg. It's detailed like Petrucci, but explained better. It's on it's 4th edition, but you can get the 3rd cheap on ebay, if you want.

Just keep going over the material and practice is all I can tell you, with the limited time you have to pass the class.

i didnt think that at all:confused:

Average salary for those working in the chemistry field: $78,000. That's average. With job demand increasing steadily. Now that's the ticket.
