It woulda been better to compare American Me vs. Blood In Blood Out. Since Blood In Blood Out was a straight up copy of American Me. Neither of the two movies you listed are based on true stories. Although the movie that BIBO copied (American Me) was based on a true story about how the mexican mafia first started. Which also caused the Mexican Mafia to put a death sentence on Edward James Olmos for telling the story of how they first became a powerful gang and he actually had to pay them money so they wouldn't kill him. But back to the topic, i actually like Mi Familia more than Blood In Blood Out. Mi Familia captures the lifestyle of many mexican families in Southern Cali and many mexican families can actually relate to the money because they have dealt with the same situations as in the movie. In example having family members that are here illegally, having family members in jail, having a brother or sister go to school then they feel like their heritage and culture are embarrassing once they get somewhat successful. Mi Familia also has a more well known cast compared to Blood In Blood Out. My Family has Edward James Olmos, Jennifer Lopez, Jimmy Smitz, Jacob Vargas, and even though she was uncredited Eva Mendes was in there too.

I thought blood in blood out was based on a true story? It was a good movie and I've never seen the others so I pick this one.

and yah, i forgot about American Me.

In terms of acting, i say Blood in Blood out, Hands Down.

But since the fires started in San Diego, i stayed home to avoid all the bad air and watched these two movies.

The acting was better on Blood In Blood Out somewhat because most of the actors were actually actors. American Me however was mainly only a few actors (the main characters), everybody else were real actual gang members from the neighborhoods where they filmed the movie and real actual inmates in the prison. During the shooting of the movie they actually had to go out and get a peace treaty signed by all the gangs so they wouldn't start shooting each other while they were filming the movie.
