Anybody familiar with cat diseases/disorders?

I know there are a lot of cat lover on the board, so I thought some of y'all might be able to help out.

My sister's cat has lost most of its hair on its stomach, backside, and hind legs. There seems to be thinner patches along the rest of its coat. When I was petting her, I thought I felt a scab or something on her neck. I saw her scratching at it a little later.

Anybody have any idea what could be wrong? I don't know if my parents will be taking her to a vet or not. I called them and they said they'd need to talk it over. Could be too expensive.

My sister's a little broken up. Any help would be much appreciated.

heh, i just got done reading that actually. all the symptoms seem to be too broad on it or not specific to her.

from what ive read, it could be a long list of things.
