Athletic apparel company adidas has released a statement expressing "sadness" over a lawsuit filed by the charity Break the Cycle (BTC), which claims its name and logo were used without permission in a line of clothing by Missy Elliott.
As previously reported, Elliott was a former spokesperson for the charity, which works to empower youth to end domestic violence through preventive education, free legal services, advocacy and support. BTC filed its suit against adidas Thursday (March 16) in federal court in Manhattan seeking $10 million.
"Adidas, along with Missy, is saddened that Break the Cycle Inc. has chosen to file a meritless lawsuit after receiving such support from adidas and Missy," adidas global communications manager Abby Guyer said in a statement to EUR. "We will continue to support the education and empowerment of youth to end the cycle of domestic violence."
Guyer futher states: "We feel we have honored all commitments to BTC and value their cause. It's unfortunate and disappointing they felt the need to file a meritless lawsuit. Each year adidas supports hundreds of non-profit organizations around the world and has never been sued by an organization it supported."
