Technology Android

Enjoy using only one app at a time, not being able to replace your battery or upgrade your internal storage, being at the mercy of Apple's restrictions as far as what gets in the app store and what doesn't, and having to jailbreak your phone to do things that it technically is capable of doing but Apple want you to buy a newer product for.

iPhone is a piece of shit and Android smacks it upside the head. Apple are running mighty scared of Google and Android right now, ask Michael Arrington ;)

As for OSX.....meh. Apple fanboys used to say "Intel inside, idiot outside".....until Apple started using Intel processors. I know people that have used Macs for 20 years that are now switching to PC's, because hardware wise there is basically no difference and they are tired of Apple's heavy-handedness.

As for your last comment, that proves you are a moron and not even worth responding to. Might as well say Basketballs > Washing Machines. But OK, if you SERIOUSLY want to have that conversation with me (which I know that you do not) I will fucking clown you to the highest degree. Don't try and mention my two favorite artists of all time, both of whom I am more educated about that everyone on this board put together and think you won't get made to look stupid. If you want it, come to "Don't Stop The Music"......and bring some tissues to cry into.
All this and yet you fail to answer my very first question. "Dont just say its better, why is it better?"

-replacement battery? not an issue. I guess u also had a cry when the iPod was released? Big problem that turned out to be right?

-Storage an issue? My iPhone has 32GB Flash memory standard? No Android phone has this standard.

like i said as long as I can listen to music and browse the web, or make a call and check the web (can you do this on Android?) or a txt im fine which is what im currently doing on my iPhone.

With OSX yes your right they use the same processors, but you fail to see y people choose Mac... the secure Unix based Operating system. Apples marketshare is the highest its ever been and thats due to switchers from Windows. Most people who have something negative to say about macs have never used one.

And in case you forgot, Macs run windows too.

OS X + Windows is better than just Windows.

Yes the last comment was a light hearted bit of fun to wind you up. It worked I see. You got a lil bit emotional there lol. :p

Sandeep14 yes correct I make remixes.

replacement battery is more of an issue than being able to buy one yourself, at a cheaper cost and just simply replace it.

storage. iphone has 32GB, thats quite good actually. but the android phones have internal storage and removable storage. so we have the best of both worlds and can decide where to store our data. an option the iphone doesnt have. (yes you can transfer your data and back it up when getting rid of the phone, but tell me how convenient is that?)

so long as it fulfils your needs, you are happy with the product. thats all that matters. but all in all, technically... the android os is technically better than the apple os.
yes we can do all those above on android, it allows for multi-tasking afterall - doesnt it, iphone consumer?.

most people i know of using the mac os is because they are doing art, design, fashion courses etc... so the college faciilities provide them with those. and then theres the so called fan boys who just buy the mac, the ipod and iphone to have the complete collection and deem themselves to be the coolest kids in the class.

oh and make some more remixes please. keep us posted on this forum.

thanks.

Sandeed thx for your reply.

With the battery I appreciate what your saying but having owned ipods in the past and now the iphone It has never been an issue. iPod wouldnt be as successful if it was.

With storage yes having removable storage is great. But its less convienient to carry around sd cards, its also slower to access data compared with the memory already built it.
In terms of transferring data I like the way itunes makes a back up of my data every time its plugged in. And to transfer pictures files or movies I email.

The only advantage Android has at this stage is multitasking (which really drains the battery). I would say technically iPhone is the best OS because of points I have mentioned.

- (MAIN REASON) = User interface, easiest and slickest/quickest phone to navigate I have used.

- Media/entertainment/Web browsing
Best music /video player. Best web browsing on a mobile phone with multi touch.

-iTunes Music store largest online music/videos/movie store. More content to choose from compared with Amazon.

-iPhone App Store, 100,000 apps vs 10,000 Android. iPhone Apps from well known developers.

Your right a lot of those professions use Macs. Theres also a lot of people who use it for basic stuff that prefer a stable operating system and a much better UI. I will admit there are a lot of fan boys, which I am certainly NOT but as I see it now there is no better alternative to the Mac OS.

I will deiffinately be dropping some new mixes made on a Mac with Logic!

Again each to his own, but some people are just hating iPhone coz its seen as the cool thing to hate on number one. Android looks promising and hopefully it does well so it can push Apple to make an even better iPhone.

Again thx for your reply.

If I'd compare the 2...

I'd say Iphone = the crackwhore down the block you pay 20 bucks for a sloppy fuck.

Android = the Grade A escort you pay 500$ an hour to fuck, which makes you feel kinda good at the end. lol
how? fair enough it may not be as good as android.. but it's not THAT bad.. i think people are exaggerating quite a bit. i have it, and im happy with its functionality and everything else. all phones have their flaws, but on the whole im pretty satisfied.

wait a sec, do you have the iphone or an android phone?

who was the guy who won a free G1 in a competition?

Reasons why Android and it's hardware is better than iPhone and iPhone OS.

1. iTunes sucks.

iTunes is the most sucktacular media player in existence. It's clunky, slow, uses far too much CPU for the basic tasks it performances, and anyone serious about music archival and having a properly organised library does not use it. But if that's your bag, fine, as long as you aren't forced into using it. With Android, there are ways to make it sync with iTunes and any other media player that you want, alternatively you can use the drag and drop method to organise your files.

2. The native iPhone apps are terrible. Mobile Safari is garbage compared to other browsers like Opera Mini. Again, with iPhone you are forced to use the proprietary software. You don't have a choice. With Android, I happily admit, that, for example, the default Messaging/SMS application is crap. But I'm not forced to use it. There are better alternatives in the Android Market, and I use one called chompSMS. It's very simple to set this as my default messaging app, and this is the case with every part of Android. You don't like the default Dialer or Address Book? Check the market. There's alternatives that you might prefer. Another way to go is to join the Android development community where, due to the open source nature of Android, developers freely modify and share core applications to fit their needs. For example, when the Droid came out rockin the all new Android 2.0, people liked the fact that the contacts section showed the icons of the contact next to the contact name. Almost immediately, a thoughtful developer modified the default Android 1.5/1.6 contacts app and shared it, so that those of us rockin G1's, MyTouch's, HTC Hero's and other devices rockin Android 1.5 or 1.6 could enjoy this same functionality. Similarly, the Android 2.0 Maps application on the MotoDroid comes with the new Google Maps navigation GPS software. Within hours of the release of the MotoDroid, people had modified the 2.0 Maps Navigation application to work on the G1. This generally leads me into my next point.

3. Android is Open Source. Open Source beats out Proprietary software every time. Even the Mac users I know use Firefox and not Safari. Why? Because Firefox is Open Source. Anyone is free to modify things to their needs. With Android, the development community, as well as the Open Handset Alliance (the group of companies that supports Android - led by Google, but also contaning such companies as T-Mobile, Intel, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Garmin, ARM, Toshiba, Acer and many more) can modify and submit patches, features, bugfixes, and changes, which the core Android team can put into Android.

The MotoDroid and Android 2.0 is the first release to contain
significant contributions from the community and the O.H.A.

Actually, you know what? The OHA deserves it's own point, so here we go.

4. The Open Handset Alliance

Wikipedia says:

The Open Handset Alliance (OHA) is a business alliance of 50 firms including Google, HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung, LG, T-Mobile, Nvidia, and Wind River Systems to develop open standards for mobile devices.

The OHA was established on 5 November 2007, led by Google with 47 members including mobile handset makers, application developers, some mobile carriers and chip makers.

Android, the flagship software of the alliance, is based on an open source license and will compete against other mobile platforms from Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Palm, Research In Motion, and Symbian.
The corporations involved in the OHA are many of the most important and powerful technological companies in the world. All of these are working towards a common goal - Android dominance. To suggest that Apple have any chance of taking on the OHA by themselves is laughable. It's like saying that Batman on his own could defeat the entire roster of DC and Marvel Comics. Not. Gonna. Happen.

The speed of Android adoption, not only amongst mobile phone manufacturers, but e-book readers, in-car entertainment systems, netbooks, media players, tablets, is not only eating away at businesses and market share that Apple already has, but any area they might want to go into in the future. It's a testament to the hard work of Google, Android, and members of the OHA, that in less than 12 months Android, with Android 2.0 has become the best mobile OS.

Apple have had what, 3 years now since the original iPhone launched? And you guys ONLY RECENTLY got MMS and video recording? Epic lol. You have to pay extra for cloud services like MobileMe, when people who don't even have Android phones yet are storing there information in the Google cloud? Epic win for Google.

4. Google dominate the internet and Apple are at their mercy.

I'd put money on the fact that every single internet user on the planet uses at least one Google service. Whether it's Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, Google Docs, Google Maps, etc.

The entire point of a smartphone is easy access to services that you already use. An OS like Android that includes these services natively (Search, Gmail, Contacts, Maps, YouTube) has the advantage over anything else that includes these things as third party applications.

Apple are absolutely at the mercy of Google. If they wanted, Google could turn off iPhone support tomorrow. No google searches, no YouTube, no Maps. The iPhone userbase would disappear overnight. But Google wouldnt do that - because every time you use a Google product, no matter the platform - Google are gaining revenue. iPhone users are unwittingly giving their money to Google.....and a big chunk of that is going where? Android.

It's well known that Apple hate this fact. This is why they rejected Google Voice from the app store, which we debated to death in another thread on here. They are scared of Google because they are being forced into a corner through Google's complete dominance.

5. Apple's heavy-handedness VS Google's Open Nature (aka App Store VS Android Market)

Applications are getting rejected from the App Store left and right. Not only that, the backlog means that developers are not even getting a response from Apple while their application sometimes sit in limbo for months and months. This is pissing the developers off and they are leaving. In droves. I've read countless stories of everyone from small developers to bigger software companies abandoning Apple over the last few months, many of whom are going to Android instead. This is primarily down to Apple's heavy handedness and policing. This dissatisfaction is also affecting the userbase, who don't want to be told what they can and can't do with the device they own.

It's absolutely pathetic and shameful on Apple's part that you are forced to jailbreak your iPhone in order for it to do simple functions that it is perfectly capable of doing, but Apple don't want you to. Perfect example - camcorder. Previous iPhones to the 3GS are perfectly capable of this, but Apple want you to spend more money on a new product that is essentially exactly the same, but with a new software feature added. Users don't like being nickel-and-dimed like that, and I personally know plenty of former iPhone users that declined to get the 3GS and moved on to other platforms (usually Android) because of this.

Another example is the popular video streaming application called Qik. This is a popular app across all platforms, yet the official iPhone version that's in the App store doesn't even support video streaming - the entire point of that application in the first place. Why? Because Apple didn't want that feature there. Tellingly, if you jailbreak the phone, you can get a Qik app from outside sources that does provide the function that users want from it in the first place.

Another warning signal came last week, when the developer of the hugely popular "Facebook for iPhone" application (which I bet you guys use), publically announced that he was quitting the iPhone platform. Why? Take a look at this:

Facebook iPhone Dev Quits Project Over Apple Tyranny

He isn't the only one.

Another reason that developers are flocking to Android, that I alluded to before, is Android's multi-gadget nature. Publishing your apps and games in the Android market means that people using all kinds of Android products will be able to enjoy them, from netbooks, to portable media players, etc. Can you imagine an in-car entertainment system running Android with screens in the backseats so that your kids could play games on them and have an unlimited choice from the Android market? It's coming.

6. Networks.

Exclusivity to one or two networks is garbage, especially in the US, where as Verizon have recently pointed out with their hilarious "There's a MAP for that" advert, AT&T's 3G coverage is complete and utter shit. Want an Android phone, it doesn't matter what your network of choice is, there's more than likely something for you. Every major carrier in the US now has 1 and in some cases 2 or 3 Android phones. Except for AT&T, who were forced by Apple to avoid Android until 2010. You can expect Dell to launch their smartphone running Android on AT&T's network in mid 2010, btw ;) :D.

7. Multi-tasking.

Once you have the ability to multi-task, you're never going back to using just one app at a time. Fact. Ask any former iPhoner that is now using Android. And it doesn't kill the battery. The ONLY Android device to have noticeable poor battery life is the G1, the very first Android product, which in many ways was the Android guinea pig. This is because it only shipped with a 1100mAH battery. Current and future Android devices have battery capacity that is unaffected by heavy multitasking and multimedia usage.

The pull down window shade notification system of Android is incredible, and blows away iPhone users. I remember once, my cousins wife (an iPhone user, but soon to be a 'Droider) was showing me how the "Last.FM" application worked on her iPhone. She loved it, but lamented the fact that she had to be within the application to use it. I immediately showed her the Android "Last.FM" application. Feature and UI-wise, almost identical. However, as a track was playing, I hit the home button and returned to the home screen, and guess what? THE MUSIC KEEPS PLAYING. Even better than that, a bar appears in the notification panel showing what song is playing. Even better than that, I can add a widget to the home screen that provides me with play and pause buttons for the "Last.FM" application - meaning I don't even have to go into the app to do anything. I can go and do anything I want, in any other app and Last FM will keep running in the background. Same with any other app. Once you have apps with background processes, there's no going back. Remember how everyone thought Windows 3.1 was the shit, and then Windows 95 came out with multi-tasking and you wondered how you ever survived running just one app at a time? Yeah. It's like that. Now for my next point.

8. Widgets

Widgets freakin rule. At the time of speaking, I have 10 widgets spread across 5 home screens. I also have the shortcuts to the apps that I use regularly. Here's what widgets I have:

Calendar widget that shows my schedule. I have this on my home screen. I lead a hectic lifestyle, so it's important to know what my next move is at all times. This is linked to the actual Calendar application, which is automatically synced to my Google Calendar online, so no matter where I am I can be in control of everything. I can also create shared calendars for band stuff and add my bandmates to the shared calendars via their Google Accounts.

Intuitive Google Search widget with Voice Search - the Google search widget is dope. It pulls all the recommended searches before I even finish typing, just like google.com. The one-tap voice search recognises everything I say, too.

real time Weather widget, music player widget, Photo frame widget - all self explanatory.

Facebook and Twitter widgets, displaying all the latest status updates from my friends. The Twitter widget also has a count of any new Direct messages or replies I have received since the last time I checked. One tap on either of these widgets will bring up the main app.

Power control widget - one tap turning on and off of Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, Background Sync and Backlight. No need to go into any long winded settings menus to do any of this.

Task Manager widget - displays the icons of all the currently running apps, one tap on any icon will kill the process.

News/RSS - all the headlines right there on my desktop.

Did I mention there's hundreds of widgets available in the Android Market? FUCK having to go into an app to see updates. That's old skool and lame. Android 2.0 even has a YouTube widget where you can one-tap record and one-tap upload your video. That's insanely cool.

Watch Apple probably wait another 3 years and then add background processes and widgets and act like they invented them, lol.

9. Need any more reasons? LOL.

Conclusion:

Android is not only superior to the iPhone OS, it's the best mobile OS available right now. What it boils down to is options. Options are great. Hardware options and software options.

Being restricted and policed sucks. Only being able to run one app at once sucks. No removable battery sucks. No external storage sucks (FYI I don't carry around multiple SD cards, I have a 16GB card which does the job perfectly, when the 32GB card comes out I can get that, when the 64GB card comes out, the same...)

I don't really have anything against Apple. I just don't agree with their methods and when their product sucks I will call them out on it. and the iphone SUCKS. Sure it might be OK for average-Joe who doesn't use his phone for much more than making calls and light multimedia usage, but you can do that with Android and a whole lot more besides.

Thank you for your reply Casey, this is what I was looking for, a detailed reason on the pros of Android!

iTunes on windows is exactly like you described lol.. well the times Ive had to use pc anyway. On Mac its perfect quick and responsive, and most of all easy to use with its interface. I would say iTunes is the best media player I have used and has the largest selection of media content online anywhere. Thats why its the number one online retailer of music.

I disagree with saying the built in iphone apps are terrible. Safari is by far the best mobile experience out there, (I say this having used a droid) and countless other smartphones.

You think the iPhone sucks? thats fine, but the rest of the world sure doesnt.

Anyway you have made some valid points. Like I said I am in NO WAY an Apple fan boy but it just so happens that they make the best computer OS Mac OSX 10.6 currently and IMO the best mobile OS (i know thats debatable tho after your comments). If something better comes out I will switch. I kind of hope Google makes their own smartphone thats when I think the platform could really take off and get even myself interested.

At the end of the day competition is good and will make Apple and Google compete to make the best phone possible. The real winner in the end will be the customer.

Thx again for your reply, so many bullshit comments with none giving ANY benefits of Android. Yours was a breath of fresh air.

btw Michael or Prince? :p

Obviously Windows 7 is far superior for a casual home user.
There are too many things you still can't do with Mac OSX (you can emulate but that doesn't count) plus right now with so many open source Unix systems getting a Mac is pointless unless you're a pro with graphics, audio, video editing or you're a fanboy/die hard fan of Mac's user interface.
So yeah, it's barely debatable, I agree that it's a matter of preference but saying that Mac is better than the best Windows system by far (even by the simple logic that Microsoft has a firm, stable grip on a huge majority of market right now) is just wrong.
I study at the IT school, all of my friends have laptops and we have free software. Most of us have tried Mac OS but only about 10% of people haven't deleted them (either because it couldn't do a lot of things they needed to do or simply because they didn't like it) so saying that people who dislike Macs are those who didn't use them is wrong. I would agree that there's a group of Windows fanboys or Mac haters just becase they find it cool to hate it but it's a minority.

Also, Android vs Mac OS on Iphones is not debatable at all as there's nothing to debate there. You can say that you like Iphone's user interface but the operating system itself has basically no advantages over Android. And I mean it - there's not even a single one probably while Android is really the shit right now.
I think the reason Iphones are still popular is because of the reason you pointed out in the earlier part about Macs but it works the other way around - people think Iphones are great because they didn't use Android and don't know how superior they are and how many more possibilities/advantages they offer.
Also, there are more people who think that it's cool to have Macs just for the fuck of it than those who hate on them for the same no-reason.

About MJ and Prince that's probably debatable but it's not my field of expertise.

I laughed hard while reading CNN technology news today:

Microsoft Windows continues to dominate the PC market with a 90 percent market-share stronghold, but when it comes to smartphones, Microsoft is getting beat up worse than a mustachioed villain in a Jackie Chan movie.
How Microsoft blew it with Windows Mobile - CNN.com

The article is biassed as it doesn't even mention Android but nevertheless the Jackie Chan reference caught me off guard.

Nerds will never undestand Apple because they only look at technical capabilities.

When people say the iPhone has the best UI for them, it's like the nerds don't even process the information. I don't care if my processor is slightly slower than yours, but using my phone makes me feel better and happier because it's convenient and sleek and I just fucking like it more.

I have a G1 by the way, I'm speaking for iPhone users though.

It's similar with macs. I've had a mac for about 6 months now and I'm still in love with it like the first day I bought it. I never had that feeling with a PC laptop and I had like 3 of them before this laptop. The uninstalling is so easy, not having to worry about viruses and anti-virus updates is so relieving, and everything is so sleek and looks awesome and I just like to set it down on my table and go to the other side of the room and just stare at the fucking apple that's lit up when I have the light all the way up. I like swiping the mousepad with four fingers and having all the windows come up. I like swiping up and having it all disappear and I don't care if windows 7 has it NOW. I like how programs and browsers look nice on a mac.

I clearly said that Android "OS" is better than Mac "OS" running on Iphones and then separated the UI factor. Don't mix up UI and OS as a whole here.
3en started a clear comparison mentioning Android and thus it became an OS vs. OS debate (since there's no specific "Android UI" - each company has its own fe. Sense UI from HTC or TouchWiz from Samsung).
While User interface is lately generally considered to be a part of operating system (since it's integrated and isn't being modified in desktop versions and most PDA OS versions) most tech heads know that it's a totally separate thing thus most brands make their own UIs while working on Windows Mobile or Symbian for example.
Take S-class UI from LG (which is almost the same UI that you have on Iphones) or Samsung's TouchWiz UI operating on most Windows Mobile phones.
To make it simple and less techy it's like placing a custom cover over a different book.
In that case judging an operating system by its UI would be like judging a book by a cover belonging to a different book written by a different author.

The OS is what turns your mobile phone into a smartphone. It's the main reason people are buying smartphones, isn't it?
Most 'casual' people who use Apple products care mostly about UI and not about quality of the operating system itself. That's one of the main reasons the Mac OS on Iphone is that popular lately. It's not the system itself because it utterly sucks, people don't even care about it while buying Iphones. They care that it's cool and has 'fancy icons' and 'fancy controls.
User interface has to be easy to navigate but it shouldn't be the main factor making you buy a smartphone or a computer or judge the system itself unless you're a part of the common mass that doesn't understand what they're buying.
It should be more about the possibilities it gives you. If you don't need them buy a less overpriced phone with even better UI and better hardware - Iphone is one of the most expensive phones ffs and most people buying it use it for calling and having fun with pictures/single games only.
Why do they need a smarphone for then? Just to be able to say "oh look at me, I have a cool smartphone glowing with fancy icons"? That's stupid and shallow.
Why not buy the LG Arena for example? Almost the same UI + decent 3d acceleration with effects, higher res capacitive screen, better 5mpx autofocus camera with Schneider-Kreuznach optics and dual-led flash, better looks and it's smaller + much cheaper.

You know that I can't comprehend the Iphone hype :)
No matter how I want to look at it, no matter what you really want from your phone there are better solutions that are not that overpriced at the same time.

About the second part if I only understood why Apple products cause bigger erection amongst some guys than fe. Microsoft or Google products that for me don't look any worse I could reply directly, but it's also something I cannot understand.
You can make your Windows desktop look beautiful too and I think that a customized "7" looks better than the latest Mac?

If I'd compare the 2...

I'd say Iphone = the crackwhore down the block you pay 20 bucks for a sloppy fuck.

Android = the Grade A escort you pay 500$ an hour to fuck, which makes you feel kinda good at the end. lol
From what I see it's more like:

Iphone = a fancy looking chick you can play with but she wouldn't allow you to touch specific areas or do things you would want to unless you rape her.

Android = a chick that can look just like you want her to look and do whatever you want her to do.
