Do we need guns?

I from the UK where there are strict controls on private gun ownership.
But since I moved to Michigan Ive noticed a huge culture of gun ownership (I know other states have it too) anyway Ive heard of lots of different reasons as to why people have them. Some for sport and others for protection.

What Ive noticed about the constitution is that even though I am NOT a US citizen, I AM allowed to own a gun (once I have a green card) BUT Im NOT allowed to volunteer as a fireman or some other public service!

That just shows me how the US' priorities are completley backwards!

So...

Do you own a gun?
What are your reason for/against gun ownership?

That's sad. I didn't even know that non-us citizens could own a gun legally.

The fact that worries me, is that I live in a popular area in S.D. and the gun shops are as frequent as tattoo parlors. Imo, if you only need it for protection there should only be a few gun shops.

Hunting? B.S. Where I live, there isn't any hunting grounds for hundreds of miles.

Anyway, I don't own a gun, and most likely never will unless I am being stalked by some faggot and the police dept. don't do shit.

I think that's the main problem. Police dept.'s don't do shit. I remember Dark Phantom making a blog or post about how the police wouldn't prosecute some faggot talking to little kids.

So, the reason I don't own guns is b/c I don't draw attn to myself. I bought my girl 2 pepper sprays. 1 that clicks to her hip, and another on her key-chain.

I can see pepper sprays or taser guns, but who the fuck needs guns?!

Thats what I think too.
I can understand its use for sports etc... I know a few people who own a 9mm just to use at the gun range, but some people have got their CWP's so they can legally carry a gun around wherever they go.

Michigan is a big hunting state so lots of people own rifles and stuff.. but walking around with a concealed glock is a bit much. I understand that I am close to Detroit and there are alot of bad folks out there, but this cycle of thinking seems to be self reinforcing..

I was also thinking of the pepper spray/taser option for wifey whose home alone..

I don't think we need it, but as long as there are guns in the world, I would much rather rely on a gun for protection than a taser -- just to be fair.

lol you're right , that's kinda messed up.

I think the more guns there are the more crimes r committed with those guns so, yeah, I'm for a strict control after all.

I don't have a gun in the house because I follow the rules and you made it harder for me to own a gun. Somebody that doesn't follow the rules shoots me and I'm dead. RIP salty

I wouldn't ever want to live in a country where a lot of idiots and stupid rednecks (so idiots) would own guns. Bad education + low morality + guns = a bloody mess. I wouldn't feel safe. I think that gun control should be as strict as possible. Unfortunately America works that way - most people were allowed to have guns so I guess I could expect every thief or mugger to own a gun. That sucks.
Guns are for killing for fucks sake.

^^You mean like civil unrest, right?

Yea, I totally agree. I wouldn't feel safe in that kind of situation so I would much rather have a gun in my home.

lol I'd feel less safe in Poland even without guns. Here, you might get robbed at gunpoint, but you're not going to get shot for 20 bucks. In Poland, since they don't have guns, they whoop the shit out of you, and then take your money.

Well, I think that getting beat up is not much compared to having a gun pointed at your face. Also I'd rather not encounter a crazy dude with a gun.

i think that people have the right to own guns in their home if they feel like they need a certain degree of protection. you live in a dangerous neighborhood and you have a family to protect and you want a pistol to keep in your home, i'm all for it. the problems start occurring when people want AK's and all types of assault weapons and shit or people advocate walking around with concealed weapons.

Last month the FBI released preliminary crime data for 2008, indicating that the nation's murder rate has fallen to a 43-year low, and the nation's total violent crime rate has fallen to a 35-year low. The data suggest that since violent crime peaked in 1991, the nation's murder rate has fallen 46 percent.

In the same time frame, federal, state and local gun control laws have been eliminated or made less restrictive. Americans have been buying over 4 million new guns every year, and the number of guns is at an all-time high.

Less gun control has coincided with less crime, as usual. Pretty simple stuff, except for those who let their emotions think for them on this topic.

In the same time frame, more people have been attending college.

Whoop-de-doo, there's my cause-and-effect.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with lax gun control, but I wouldn't use the FBI data to suggest that there is less crime because criminals are scared of Joe the Plumber having a shotgun in the basement.

I would rather be shot than stabbed, but we have very strict gun laws in the UK, people carry knives instead. Like I said, I'd rather be shot than stabbed.

Opposing Views: OPINION: Brady Campaign Won't Admit Less Gun Control Means Less Crime

That's the best I can do for ya carmi

I guess I can agree with S O F I, I don't see a solid connection. At the same time, I don't believe that strict control is going to prevent violent crimes. And people talk about AK's and concealed weapons --- laws aren't going to prevent people from carrying illegal weapons. I might have a problem with that just like you.
1st link doesn't work for me.

I do not believe giving guns to everyone lowers criminal rate... and I do not believe a very strict control would lower the criminal rate either. I guess somewhere in the middle would be fine.

Guns are way too accessible. No wonder there are so many school shootings, etc.
