Anybody here Muslim or knows something about the traditions.

What are the 'rules' governing funerals and what are the beliefs regarding life after death?

The one thing I know about this is a Muslim must be buried within a given time span of his death. I believe it's four days, but I'm not sure. Someone on here will know.

On the life after death thing, I've noticed now that I don't know about this aspect of Islam at all, heh. Do they have a Hell? Purgatory?

I'm off to google this evening.

They must bury the dead as soon as possible, cremation is a big no-no.

Islam has the same idea as Christianity and Judaism. Heaven is some marvelous place where people never age and there is always happiness. There is no "original sin" in Islam, so babies who die instantly go to heaven.

Hell is a place for punishment. Same as the other Abhrahamic religions.

I don't know but their hell must be much cooler than Catholic hell.. if it wasnt't then they wouldn't blow themselves up all the time.

This is a bit off topic but, when you say heaven is good and you never age and theres always happiness, how do people know this? Has there been anybody come down from heaven and tell what was it like there?

They don't know, really. And even if someone actually came down from heaven, he or she would never be able to offer actual proof of this.

So you'll just have to take their word on it all. :)

Hence why I don't like religions, hehehehe

It's not actually true, it's just what they believe.

would you guys rather believe that there's nothing after death? That you die and that's all, nothing happens after that?
If I'd have to believe that I'd be pretty depressed and afraid of death. Sometimes it's better to believe in your hopes and dreams.

It was written in a book so therefore it is that way.

See how ridiculous that is?

It gives me a drive to live my life to the fullest rather than spend time doing worthless stuff like praying for forgiveness or not eating a certain animal because of its feet. Sure thinking that once you die it's over is depressing but I don't think about it. I don't remember what it was like before being born, i'm sure its going to be like that when I die.

That's ridiculously extreme and a bit ignorant.
Not everyone believing in life after death refuses to eat meat, believes in his holy book and such. Also having that faith, believe me or not - makes your life better and easier. It's really important for the sake of your life comfort and overall enjoyment to be spiritual.

Depends where you come from. I have no faith, and trying to emulate having faith would make me feel phony. I think maybe there is a force of nature that's equivalent to religious people's God in some manners, but that's more a thought I had while watching Lost and being high. I don't feel depressed or worse because I don't have faith though. Faith never struck me as logical, and I get annoyed when things are illogical. You have faith and "feel bad" for people who don't, I don't have faith and "feel bad" for people who do. In the end, whatever part or function of the brain that makes us humans desire to believe in something receives the same stimuli.

I'm somewhere in between. I'm aware that most religions are irrational and fiction and that millions of people waste their lifes for something that doesn't exist. On the other hand I believe in deeper spirituality and whenever I think that there's no spirituality in life and take the scientific point of view it gets me depressed, because I know that it's probably true.
I know that if I'd force myself permanently into that point of view it would be bad for me tho. I'd rather believe that there is some kind of utopia somewhere. I'd rather believe that some things are spiritual, rather than believe in natural rights and that everything happens totally in an ordinary way according to physic/chemistry/mathematic laws.
I just chose to because that's when I enjoy my life more. I'd rather see something better in something plain than realise that it's just ordinary and there's nothing special about it.
I'd rather think and see beautiful things in something that other people would describe as normal and natural. That's my way to fully feel the joy of life because life as it is, is not bright enough - I think that the way to reach that joy is to free your mind as much as possible and try to see everything in a different way. I was depressed for a long time (you might even remember my threads here) and while I might sound a bit like some spiritual-religious psycho, I have to tell that it really works.
I know people that are totally optimistic and have their own perceptions of life, they don't pay much attention to their problems while they enjoy every moment and take the joy out of every second.
I wish I was that way, their lifes are really worth living and I envy them the most.

Having faith or believing in a kind of afterlife does not enrich my life for me. My life is here, now. And Im living it now. So now is what matters, not when I die. I'll deal with that once I get there. :)
