you know, most Irish football fans support English teams. Its always been like that mainly because our own league isnt at a high standard. Liverpool have a huge Irish following. Man Utd likewise. and obviously most of Celtic's support is Irish.

Since most of our national team plays in the premiership then its only natural that we will support those teams.

This acctually has a lot to do with opinions. It is your opinion that he can't perform. It is YOUR opinion that he can't put the ball in the net. It is however a fact that he can still perform, very well indeed, he can still score goals even better then most players that are playing nationally. Yes, even with his "OVERWEIGHT BELLY" he can score goals. that is a FACT.
Oh, and he showed that where exactly the last few years? Oh yeah, he didn't.

He's in and out of hospital, he's almost 32, he has no match rhythm whatsoever. Let's face the music here, his professional footballing career at the highest level is OVER. O-V-E-R. OVER.

You just can't throw away everything he did before because he doesn't perform as well as he used to. What does that mean? It means that though he is not performing the way he used to, he can still perform well enough, and better than any of the new players on the Brazil squad. he wasn't the three time player of the year for nothing. and YES, i said "reputation" as it still comes into play here.
No he can't perform "well enough" because he keeps getting injured. And besides that, Brazil has plenty of strikers and goalscorers. Sure, not of the caliber of Ronaldo in his heyday, but so what? There are no Romario's either, are we going to call him up? Past glory is past glory, man. Of course, Ronaldo was fantastic back in the day. One of the best strikers ever. Maybe the best (debateable). But that was many years ago. It's as simple as that. If he didn't have his injuries and played regular, consistent football on a high level up to this point, even then I'd say he has max. 2 years left on the highest level. But he's been struggling for years now. It's over. Accept it.

if u really want to know how you are a fanboy:

first of all, you asking me whether you are a fanboy makes me sense that you aren't too confident about yourself.

second of all, you seem to know a lot about brazil - as seen from your past postings - that may not prove that you are diagnosed with a large amount of fanboyism, but you seem to have all of the symptoms (as you described them). :)
I don't know more about Brazil than I do about Argentina or the Belgian U23 squad. I know my football, I don't specifically know stuff about anything else than the Dutch league and team. So that makes me not a fanboy. Bye.

Dude, Ruud probably has the biggest and longest jaw that I ever seen in an athlete. Really. Come on now.
Yup. So? I'm saying, what you want in a footy player is performance on the pitch. That's it. Rahim kept bagging on about "reputation". Who cares if the man can't perform on the pitch? Hence the weird teeth remark.

Fanboy (sometimes spelled fanboi) is a term used to describe an individual who is devoted to a single subject in an emotional or fanatical manner, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession.

I don't see anywhere in these lines that says you have to be supporting foreign team to be a fanboy.

So if we go by this definition, we are all fanboys (football fans) because we all support and are obsessed with the teams we like. You don't get a special treatment. That includes yourself as well Dutchman.
Well, you can devote your life to Liverpool but if you're a born and bred Liverpudlian, there's no chance in hell you're a fanboy. I'd say a fanboy is someone who supports a certain very popular or very good side (if you're a hardcore Hull fan I find it hard to term you a fanboy, lol) while they themself have no relation at all with that club or country. You can like certain nations or teams, particularly if your own country or local squad is 100% rubbish, but if you're going around saying "thats my team" when it's not really "your" team, I think fanboy. It's not so much about the devotion but more about who is idolizing what exactly. A Rotterdammer that is a die hard Feyenoord man is the exact opposite of a fanboy. He's supporting his home side.

Imo a fanboy is more of a person that "shops" around for a team, choosing on glory and how good they are, rather than raw unbridled passion that one sees with people supporting home sides. For example, as annoying as Sandeep is with his Villa bullshit, it's his home side. Ergo, NOT a fanboy, but a real loyal fan.

Yea the same way I'm saying Ruud has a weird jaw.

How do you know he meant the weird teeth of Ronaldo is part of the "reputation" when people think of him? You just brought that remark yourself to slip in a joke.

That might be true but I never "shopped" around a team and then made my choice to be Italy or Juventus fan. I always been their fans. Ever since I started watching football. So that does not apply to me. My recent likings' of other teams (Brazil) doesn't really mean that either. It just that I like their play and thats all.

Ronaldo's a legend, he's up there with Zidane and Ronaldinho as one of the best players i've seen in my time, but anyone can see his days are numbered. If he does indeed soon hang his boots up it will be a shame the way his career ended.

^^ It doesn't look like it acctually...

Real Ronaldo: I'll Be As Good As Before

The 32 year-old, who celebrated a birthday this week, has been out of commission since February due to ruptured knee ligaments sustained in a league match for AC Milan against Livorno.

The extent of the injury meant that the ex-PSV legend had his contract with the Italian side anulled, and he has been without a club since.

This week, after close to seven months of inactivity, Ronaldo returned to training with Brazilian side Flamengo, who have given the striker permission to use their facilities.

Now that he has been set on the path to recovery, the ex-Real Madrid forward has promised to regain his best form, which saw him hit over 70 goals in 104 Brazil caps.

Although he has been jeered at for gaining weight during his recovery, Ronaldo is confident of playing at the top level again.

He told the press: "When you haven't been able to do any physical activity for five months, it's only natural to put on weight.

"I'm not feeling any twinges in my knee anymore and that's what really matters.

"The muscles are still weak though and it's not easy to get a machine going that hasn't been used for so long.

"From now on it's about working on my physical condition - that's the trickiest part but I'm on the right track.

"I will be back and I'll rediscover my best form. I'll play football again like I did before."

^^ But that still doesn't change the fact that he is motivated, enough, to even say that.

And he is training right now with Flamingo....

He is motivated.

Not to mention that he just came out of a successful surgery just a few weeks ago.

I'm expecting a different outcome this time.

There's only so many times you can hit rock bottom...but after that you are bound to make your way back up... even if it takes a while.

^^ The point is that he doesn't have "that while". He's 32, give or take. Recovering from such intensive surgery, no matter how succesful it was, then getting fit and finding form, takes a good half year, if not more. Then he's 32 and a half without match rhythm and a dubious bill of health.

If he was 26, then no problem, hang out the flag in anticipation of his return, but he's 32, he's been struggling for years. Time is up.

Time is up for him, man. Just accept it. He was one of the best, ever. Was. Those times are gone.

Unfortunately Rahim I don't share your optimism, theres nothing more I'd love to see than Ronaldo to reach the level of football he once played at but I think he has one too many obstacles to overcome.

Let me get this straight...

so you think that if he was 26 right now his health and fitness would not be a problem...but since he is 32 it is a problem?

It is perfectly normal for a person, especially an athlete to get out of shape when they haven't been physically active for over 5 months... and in Ronaldo's case, he has been out of shape for that long due to his injury back in January.

What's important is that he has continued to train.

Yea but this is a 32 year old athlete who has has 3 career threatening injuries. Maybe you should do some research on knee ligament tears. I know plenty of guys who have suffered knee ligament tears. They were never the same afterwards.

But Ronaldo will more than likely be back playing at club level again which is great. Its just doubtful that he he will play for Brazil at the next World Cup.

injuries or no injuries, im going to expect the best outcome for ronaldo playing in the wc..

im an optimist.

if you look at the big picture, what would be the goal of a great Brazilian soccer player, better yet any soccer player who plays national who just started training again?

the answer: to play in the world cup for their team

why?

cuz there is always a big picture..and if you cant find it, then you need to look harder.

Ronaldo to snub Europe for return to Brazil

Brazilian striker Ronaldo, one of the finest players of his generation, has decided to turn his back on European football in favour of a move back to his homeland and a possible contract with Flamengo.

The striker is training with Flamengo in Brazil.

The three-time FIFA World Player of the Year is on the brink of a return to the game after recovering from a career-threatening knee injury ahead of schedule.

Ronaldo sustained the injury eight months ago while playing for AC Milan and, since becoming a free agent in the summer, offers have been pouring in for the 32-year-old.

French Ligue 1 outfit Paris St Germain are among the European outfits thought to be leading the chase for his services, but Ronaldo, who has been training with Flamengo, is hopeful he will be playing for his boyhood club next season.

In Rio de Janeiro, he told the Bem Amigos show on SporTV: ''If everything is okay, I want to stay [at Flamengo]. I've been in Europe for 16 years. Flamengo are my favourite, but I don't want to play there as a favour. I want to deserve to play there.''

However, Ronaldo, whose career has been blighted by a succession of serious injuries, revealed he is thinking about retiring if he cannot get back into top shape.

''I could hang up the boots,'' he said. ''If I think I am not fine, I will retire. It's useless if you are physically fit but you are not fast. I already lost some weight but I must lose more.''

And the former Barcelona and Real Madrid frontman - a World Cup winner with Brazil in 1994 and 2002 - has not given up hope of an international recall.

He added: ''I am a wounded soldier who is recovering, but not dead. The national team is part of my life. I have big history with it, with a number of titles and defeats. I am making a big sacrifice and I do dream of the national team.''
