I mostly ignore people or sometimes I look at them incredulously and ask.. "are you serious?" Without expecting an answer.

It's more than just with people in day to day life though. It's a constant in the media also. IDK I guess i'm just sick of hearing it.

I agree! Especially people who've been here for soo many generations they don't even really know which ancestor came over to America and when! Like the whole "African American" thing, WTF? Unless they're the people who own hair braiding shops and got here last week, I don't think they're African American. Just plain old American should suffice but it doesn't. People want to be treated equally but then also want special labels and treatment. Blah :fury::noworry:

I called Sebastian a Nazi a few times just because he's from Germany and altho we don't know each other well I can tell that he won't take it serious. So it's a "joke" based on stereotype and it's not meant to be serious, it's like making fun of that stereotype itself more than about Sebastian meing a Nazi.

I'm surrounded by white people. What's funny is all the minorities stick together, black, hispanic, asian, whatever, cus of it. Our white friends dont ask us hair braiding questions but more like how do you deal with certain shit, like police profiling, and just racist people in general. You never have a good answer but you just keep moving. There are people everywhere who are sick of race. Europe and America started the labeling and continue to push it. I'll never claim a piece of land if it isnt the origin of my ancestry. Why would I? But still, I would use my race to deprived anybody else or use it as an excuse for a hand out. Minorities are alwayz gonna be oppressed, I believe, but thru everyday living, I think people of all races should learn to respect eachother and their cultures. You don't have to like it, but don't take it upon yourself oppress people because.....And me being of African descent, I could and do want be equally treated and I would do the same for everybody esle. Try to look at this from another direction. This post will be full of presumptions and examples, just look at the point.

You've got your pictures in your signature, and I've been on this forum with you for years so I know very well you're from the Dominican Republic. You clearly identify with Dominicans, and very much take pride in your heritage. At the same time, you live in America, and want to identify as an American, not an African something something or a Dominican Northern American. Now you take me who live in Norway. We have lots of immigrants from all over the world, but Africans have not had such a big impact on Norway. I simply have not had to deal with a lot of black people in my life. The way blacks are discriminated in life differs from the way arabs are discriminated. I have no idea what I can or can't say to a black person so as to not step over the line. I just know there's a line and you're not supposed to step on it. If anything, my ignorance comes from the fact that you want to be both American and Dominican, and you can't make a choice about who you want to identify with. I only worry about racial issues because certain people with a darker hue of skin than myself will throw a fit if I just be myself. I say this from experience. Just like a depressed person thinks the world is against him I can see black people thinking everybody's a racist as part of some bigger human social evolutionary anxiety bullshit phenomenon of our century. I know this is true for many cases.

There's so many maybe's and possibly's involved when two humans with different skin color and facial features interact, that if I were to not think about race as an issue, I would sooner or later get socked for saying the wrong thing. We both know this is true.

I've never really had issues with race. I was brought up to be more territorial. So it didn't matter as much what race you was, more of where you was from. Different territories had different reputations, and they got treated accordingly. It was ok for me because I lived in the biggest village in the town. Issues of race came afterwards.

I am still getting used to the whole race issue thing, and sometimes find it hard to believe that race is sometimes peoples first and foremost issue with regards to dealing with other people. I never had any racial prejudices growing up. For me the #1 issue has always been territory.

Race in an objective context is probably the biggest foundation on which a person can place their pride. And I say this is why it is such a big issue.

Ever heard of the Huns (as Attila the Hun)? Lots of different "races" but one people. Race was not an issue because there was no racism among them. Racism at its purest is just xenophobia but racism today is a loose system (founded in the (pseudo-)science of race). Today race is such a big issue because of that, not because it's a foundation for pride. You'll find that the more we focused on race beyond the superficial the bigger the issue became.

Like Puff said, it doesn't help with all the labels but the African American thing makes perfect sense. Besides the fact that it's correct to say that every black person came from Africa (there's a difference between homo sapiens having evolved in Africa 2+ million years ago and black people only being found in Africa 1-2000 years ago ... it's not like it was a voluntary migration either), the term didn't just pop up. It went from Nigger to Negro to Black to African American. The term will exist as long as race is an issue (so... forever?) and to a lesser extent as long as people are patriotic.

I don't know about that. You can get people to sock you for saying the "wrong" thing any time but how would you go about making a comment that would get you socked for racism if you're not thinking of race as an issue? Give me some examples of when you pissed off black people :hungry:
