Technology DVD scratch repair?

so i'm very pissed off at my former employers, HMV. i just purchased the Ghostbusters 1 &2 gift set DVDs, and when i got it home and opened it, the first movie had 2 fairly deep scratches on it. of course, that means my DVD player won't play about 5 minutes at the best point of the movie, the ending (the marshmallow man barely shows up and then it glitches up, skips, freezes like crazy. of course it returns to normal about a minute after they blow him up). now of course the stupid copyright laws don't allow me to return the movie after it's been opened, so i'm stuck with a scratched, essentially ruined DVD. so what i'm wondering is if anyone knows what the best scratch removal stuff is for DVD's. does it really work? a friend of mine bought a kit and tried it once but it didn't seem to work very well, so i don't want to get ripped off.

btw: i didn't know if this belonged here or where else it would go, mods see fit to move it if it is warranted.

Fuck that man, get yourself back into HMV and cause a scene. You will get a replacement to problem at all. If you dont start shouting at the staff and demand to see the manager, explain you spend a lot of cash in the shop and to get a product which is faulty is fuckin scandalous.

the funny thing is i used to be the assistant manager at an HMV (not the same one, the one i worked at closed) so i can tell you that won't work. it is AGAINST THE LAW for them to give a refund or exchange if the package has been opened. i had to deal with enough pissed off customers to know this as fact (i make it sound like this happened a lot but it wasn't that much. but DVD cases suck for the most part, the discs pop out a lot during transport). the store could get up to a $100,000 fine for doing that. plus it's up to the customer to prove that they didn't cause the damage. how exactly can i prove that it was scratched when i opened it?

are you being serious? wtf, dont you have consumer laws? In the UK we have the "Sales Of Goods Act" that means if you have been sold a faulty or damaged product, you have the right to a replacement or refund if you return it with 28 days.

lol that happened to a friend of mine, he bought a DVD and the disc was in there so tight he actually snapped it trying to take it out. the strange thing with my case is that the disc was in there properly, it wasn't loose, but it was still scratched.

sometimes DVD cases are fucked. you pick up the case and you can hear the disc moving around in there.

but then sometimes the cases are too good, they are in there so tight you almost snap the disc in half trying to get it out.

WTF? Is this only a law in Canada? I used to work in retail and we were allowed to exchange an item ONLY if it was defective and it had to be for the exact same item (pretty much defeats the purpose of copying the item if it's the same item you are exchanging it for). You should still go in and try to raise hell cause thats straight up bullshit!

But back to topic your only bet is gettin one of those cd buffers that will buff out the scratches. They will leave your cd's like new and actually work considering most of the other cd "repair" kits tend to be shit and not work.

Actually we did exchange it for scratches. It didn't matter wat was wrong with the item as long as you exchanged it within the given exchange time and it could only be exchanged for the same item. Man you should have seen the shit that people returned sometimes....

thats why I open it as soon as I get it home, if its damaged i take it straight back because I've had it for a matter of hours and you would have to be a fucking idiot to scratch it in that time frame.

you buy it, take it straight home to watch it, and drop it. it ain't that hard to do. plus the world is full of fucking idiots.

Actually we did exchange it for scratches. It didn't matter wat was wrong with the item as long as you exchanged it within the given exchange time and it could only be exchanged for the same item. Man you should have seen the shit that people returned sometimes....

yeah and i guarantee you guys were getting ripped off and losing money all the time then. the law does allow for some concessions when it comes to returns, but HMV store policy is to not accept exchanges after the package has been opened. it even says that right on the receipt lol.
