I don't think so. Many people online including game reviewers stated that Shenmue is the best gaming story ever.
MGS could make a nice book, same with Final fantasy but it won't change the way you see the world and most definately won't change your personality. I think Shenmue is totally above MGS and FF series not because you're more into the story as it is but it makes you think more. It's just diiferent.
Some people will prefer a thrilling action story while some will prefer Shenmue-like sentimental stuff. I'm much more into Shenmue, I experienced it few months ago and it's totally perfect to me. It's just much more than a plain game, it's a virtual experience that to me, is much more than any other game.
I played every MGS game and passed most of them at least few times btw.
Before Shenmue my top game series were:
1. C&C series
2. GTA series
3. MGS series
4. Fallout series
and I spent months playing each of those games.

I take it you haven't read many reviews of Shenmue, you should do that before you post things like this.

I played most PSX parts of FF. I played most PSX games actually.
I've been reading many reviews of Shenmue and I found only 2 (gamespot and some other) where it's story was not 10/10.
I found many saying it's the best gaming story ever.
And it is IMO and whatever you say it won't change what I think. To me it's the best gaming story, not because of trivial basic story that Ryo's father dies and he tries to get his killer for the whole game, but elements of the story which are much deeper than elements of any other game. And while I wouldn't like to read "Shenmue the book", I love it's values. It's the most sentimental game, it's story is plain deeper than anything else I played. And of course it's my opinion.
I respect that you might like other things and find other types of game stories better.
Same with movies - not everybody find the same genres great. Some people say there are action movies with good stories while to me action movies have no stories at all.
While MGS or FF story might be fun to play or entertaining overall it's not as deep as Shenmue. As I said it's the kind of game that's not for everyone to understand - but if you do it changes your way of thinking.

Does it require THAT much of a brain? I don't think so.
It's a bit wannabe deep combined with cool thrilling moments and lame sci-fi. But it's good for a video game.

masta, the reason why the MGS story is better than any other is because its an on going story that has been taking place in the world of gaming for 21 years (Metal Gear was release in 1987), and all interlink with each game. The story and philosophy is extremely complex and has never been fully understood. More importantly the story in MGS has actual truth to it, making similarities to the likes of the Free Masons & The Illuminati. Shenmue is just a story, it has no history, no truth and philosophy.
