16-0

The Patriots are perfect

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- With one mighty heave, Tom Brady and Randy Moss took care of the record books. Now it's down to business for the unbeaten New England Patriots: stamping themselves as the greatest team in NFL history.

The Patriots completed a perfect if somewhat joyless journey through the regular season Saturday night, finishing with a remarkable 16-0 record following a thrilling 38-35 comeback victory over the New York Giants.

New England became the first NFL team since the 1972 Dolphins to win every game on the schedule, and that one was only 14-0. This victory required a comeback from a 12-point deficit engineered by the brilliant Brady, and smashed the Patriots' league mark for consecutive victories.

Validation of their inexorable march through the season can only come by adding a Super Bowl championship, their fourth of the decade. Do that and there'll be no challenge to their spot at the top.

In gaining their 19th straight win over two seasons, the Patriots also got record-setting performances from Brady and Moss, including the winning score, a 65-yard bomb with 11:06 remaining. Brady beat Peyton Manning's mark of 49 touchdown passes by throwing two to Moss against the Giants (10-6), giving the star quarterback 50. Moss broke Jerry Rice's record of 22 TD receptions. And the Patriots finished with an incredible 589 points for the season, another single-season record.

Yet this was anything but a coronation. The Giants, with little to play for except spoiling New England's perfect ride - New York is guaranteed playing at Tampa Bay in the playoffs next weekend - led 28-16 in the third quarter. It was the Patriots' largest deficit all year as the Giants showed no fear and plenty of versatility, scoring the most points New England allowed in a game during this remarkable run.

An efficient Eli Manning, at times resembling his vaunted older brother, threw for four touchdowns. Domenik Hixon, in his first game as New York's primary kick returner, went 74 yards for a score 11 seconds after Brady and Moss tied their respective records.

Not to worry. These Patriots are unflappable, and they matched their comebacks in wins over Indianapolis, Philadelphia and Baltimore earlier in the season. A 73-yard drive ended with Laurence Maroney's 6-yard run to make it 28-23 with 4:00 to go in the third period.

Then came the most familiar of scenes: Brady dropping back, winding up and hitting a wide-open Moss in stride for a touchdown. The final go-ahead TD in their perfect year.

Although many are eager to hail these Patriots as the NFL's all-time best, such acclaim won't come unless they win two playoff games and their fourth Super Bowl this decade. And for those who might deny such greatness considering the "Spygate" scandal from early in the season, well, 19-0 would speak pretty loudly.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick hugged players and assistant coaches on the sideline as the game ended.

i was watching the game, and it was a damn good game... both teams could have just sucked it up and pretended it was the pro bowl or something... but everyone did their best and it showed...

brady is so fucking amazing... that one pass before he hit the ground that moss almost had? then two passes in a row to moss... fuck me.... just fuck me....

i was never a patriots hater.. im not a bandwagon fan either, but i root for them... im not gonna go out and buy a jersey or a hat or somehting... im not gonna go to a giants fan and laugh or a colts fan or any other team that the pats had to go through to get to where they are... i respect them... that... and my bears sucked anus this year... im happy for the pats.... they do have a lot of pressure on them though.... if they lose 2nd round....man... that will be bad

wow, that was a great game. i was worried that even with the historical implications of this game, it would end up being a blowout, but the Giants played their asses off. even Eli looked pretty good at some points (and i hate Eli, so that says something) and their defense was attacking Brady all night. but Tom Brady is Tom Brady, and he made some amazing plays. there was one in particular that impressed me, when Osi Umenyiora was coming up on his blindside. now there was no way Brady could have seen him, he had his back turned to him, but just as Osi got there Brady ducked and he missed him! i was like "does he have eyes in the back of his head?" lol.

one question tho. what the hell did Moss get that penalty for on his first touchdown? i've seen players do worse and not get called, and i can't figure out what he did to warrant that penalty. i'm not really a Pats fan, but i hate to see teams lose because of a bad call, and if the Pats had lost that game by less than 7 i would have been very pissed. anyway congratz to the Pats for an undefeated season, Tom Brady for setting the new TD bar to 50, and Randy Moss on his now record 23 TDs (although i will debate this record since Jerry Rice, the previous record holder with 22, did that in a strike shortened, 12-game season in 1987). however, if they don't win the Super Bowl, 16-0 won't mean anything.

Also, for the record.. I think the 16-0 regular season DOES mean something even if they don't win the super bowl. I'm a Patriots fan and i'll obviously be cheering for them to win, but i'm just saying. That says alot for its self. An undefeated season. It's only been done once and even that was 2 less games. It's gonna mean MORE if they win the super bowl though.

well i'll put it this way: yes, 16-0 means something no matter what. they are the first team to do it, and whether or not it's done again, they will always be recognized for doing it first. it's a great accomplishment but now that they have done it, they are basically expected to win the Super Bowl, and anything short of that will be considered failure. do you think the Pats will consider it a successful season if they get knocked out in the second or third round? and since the discussion around the NFL is whether or not they are the greatest team ever, they MUST win the Super Bowl to be ranked above the '72 Dolphins.

i mean, did you see Tom Brady's interview right after the game? he wasn't even all that excited, same with Belichick. to them it's just another win on the way to the Super Bowl. that's all they are thinking about right now.

I'm guessing he was probably coached by one if his team mates.

"Man in your back!"

actually what i was thinking is that since QB's do wear earpieces to get the plays called from the sidelines, one of the coaches probably told him "heads up!" cuz there really was no one else around to warn him, and there was literally no way Brady could have seen him coming.

Well, basically the same thing then.

I always liked how American sports embraced technology to make the game better and more fair. That's something the crowd of conservative, fat assholes (I would actually kill Blatter if you put me in one room with him) that run my favorite game can learn from.
