Even though xbox 360 was released more than a year before, being massively modded, being cheaper and actually not much worse than ps3 anyway Sony branded console sold more in much shorter time. While 360 was released in USA and Japan on the same day and came to europe in short time it couldn't even halfway join Sony's success at first stocking only 500,000 consoles in the US and Japan on November and 1.5 milion in Europe on march-april 2007.
Based on statictics from 31 July Sony produced 5.5milion consoles while they sold over 4.28 milion.
Based on Microsoft's information on the same day (31 july 2007) they had 11.5 million shipped while they sold 8.9 milion.
Microsoft invested over 12 times more into promotion (Sony invested a small amount promoting their console thinking it won't achieve any major success) of their console but anyway if sales will keep up, untill September 2008 Sony will sell twice as much consoles as Microsoft,
but demand on ps3 will even increase when it will finally be modded, announced exclusive titles will be released, price will drop, ps3 will be available worldwide (it still wasn't released in few major countries) new games will take too much to fit into single dvd disk (360's hd-dvd standard only applies to movies, there's no possible hd-dvd gaming compatibility) and bd-rom prices will drop and it will become a standard for HD movies.
only Nintendo's "low-end" console - "the Wii" noted more sales - according to Nintendo untill 12 of september they shipped 12 milion consoles, selling 10,7milion (note that over 7.5 milion consoles were sold in Asia only, over 2 milion in Americas, 400 thousand in Europe and nearly 800 thousand on other continents)
It can't be directly compared in this "battle" tho as it's not a multimedia device or a straight gaming console, it's rather considered an "entertainent gadget" for people on low budget wanting to taste a 7th generation gaming.

It's a surprise, I was a bit scared when Sony kicked major people responsible for Playstation 1,2 and 3 including the guy who invented those consoles - they even announced that PS3 isn't a big success. Also I knew that PS3 is better and more of a future investment but I thought it won't sell much because of it's price (in Poland it costs twice as much as modded 360 premium). I was confused because of that and though about buying that 360 (for me it would be good because I'd be able to play my old xbox games - I own good old xbox console now)
but if Sony will sell more consoles they'll be able to drop the price, buy new exclusives, compatibility will be larger and BD rom will become a standard. Also 360s biggest advantages except the price = amount of games. The more ps3s sold, the more games will come out increasing console's success.
