Antonio Puerta was substituted during the first half of Sevilla's clash against Getafe, after collapsing on the pitch.
He then collapsed again in the dressing room, and was immediately rushed to the local hospital, and found suffering from serious breathing and cardio-vascular problems.
The player was accompanied by Sevilla skipper Javi Navarro, club president Jose Maria Del Nido, and some other board members.
He has since improved, after being put on immediate life support, but is still not out of danger.
Del Nido revealed that the player was still "in very serious condition".
Another club director Jose Maria Cruz, gave a slightly more assuring response: "He is stable, conscious, and has regained his pulse, though not out of danger yet."
The exact reasons for the collapse are unknown, but it is hypothesized that the player blacked out due to a lack of supply to oxygen to a section of the brain, which also affected other body functions.
Sevilla coach Juande Ramos, speaking after the 4-1 win over Getafe, could not care less about the result, and insisting that "it all paled in comparison to Puerta's condition".
