Technology Laptop + Vista = $$?

I am helping someone purchase a laptop and they don't want to spend more than $700.00. I'm not familiar with Windows Vista. But apparently, 1GB of RAM isn't sufficient to run on Vista. Is this correct? I know that anything less is out of the question, but I'm under the assumption that 1GB isn't sufficient. Anything higher, like 2GB is a a major increase in price. So I was wondering if someone could help me figure out the best specs for Vista to run smoothly.

The only thing this computer will be used for is basic functions: e-mail, web, IM, downloading music, and playing Yahoo games. That is literally all this person does.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

If that's the only thing the person does....do you really need vista?

I've have vista on 1gig and it runs ok, however it is much smoother on 2gig. It's still perfectly usuable with 1 gig.

She doesn't have an XP disc anymore. And where can you buy a laptop retail with XP.

i don't think they still sell laptops with xp on it. and i don't see the use of buying a laptop if you want to buy one under $700. for me a good laptop is at least $1,000 with good memory and everything. but if she really needs it for e-mail and other basic stuff, she should go to a place where they specialize in computers and get the cheapest one.
