Its irritating me that you seem to be serious about your question...

What is your life worth if you are (fatally) ill? I affirm that those who are smart know that their own health is the basic thing for everything they do. What the...why am i trying to explain it?
Why don't you answer Illu's question then? Why do intelligent people smoke?

I provided a so-so answer.

I don't smoke, never tried it and I hope I never will. It's not so much of a religious thing because to me what's even more important then religion is who YOU are. I guess I don't mind if other people smoke, as long as it's away from me and I don't have to breath it in.

I think Illu corrected what he said before. You can be an intelligent person in general but nonetheless do something "stupid" once in a while.

..somehow this doesnt really explain it for me (considering what i said a post before). Hmm, honestly i have to ask someone smart :p

I agree. See, I never understood why people smoke so I never started. I think it becomes unintelligent if u do it without beein able 2 explain (and fully realize) why. Fully realize also means that you know about and can live (or die) with the consequences.

People are so specific about smokin'....Ok smokin' is not good for your health, but so are many other things that we all still do. Like...sittin in front of the PC 7 hours a day (or play PS3) is NOT good for your eyes. To drive faster then it's allowed on the road is not healthy neigther, but still everyone might speed once in a while. To drink more then one glass of wine is not healthy. Etc Etc Etc. Smokin might be stupid, I see it as kinda stupid myself, but to come in here and critizies the people that do, callin' them unintelligent...well, you are only allowed to do that if you live 100% healthy without any "stupid" actions - and I don't think anyone can claim to be that way.

This comparison sucks. Why? Because there is no way you can avoid traffic. You have to cross the road, use a car etc. But you can choose if you want to smoke or not. Get the difference?

Its very likely that you are not happy when you are ill. Plus this comment makes it seem like everyone who doesnt smoke is bored. Which is absurd, of course.
Stop agreeing with Illuminattile (and Amara) and have your own opinion for once:eek:
Go jogging.:D
I am a heavy smoker, I smoke like 3 packs in 2 days. Yes, I am better off not smoking but it's a habbit that I have picked up and have come to enjoy over the years. I am also aware of how unhealthy it is and how many people die from smoking-related every year. It doesn't mean that I am unintelligent, it simply means that the way I see it, the "benefits" of smoking outweight it's disadvantages in my eyes. I don't care if I die from lung cancer the same way I don't care if I die in an accident. Death is death, you can't escape it by not smoking.
I know that it's true I can't escape death by refraining from smoking, but live a few more untroubled years spending time with my grandchildren and what not. I assure you that if I were to die from a smoking-related illness, I will live long enough to see my grandchildren. I am planning to get married at a young age and my children will most likely do the same thing.

^One day, when you leave your village and get on the autobahn, you will get hit by a truck and die. Then, you'll be like, "I could have smoked all this time".

the one thing i have noticed reading through this thread is that no one is even mentioning the reason why so many people smoke: IT IS ADDICTIVE. sure, most people start because they think it makes them look cool, or peer pressure, or whatever. but most continue to do so because they are addicted. and most smokers aren't complete idiots, we know what it does to our health, and i would say that if you ask most smokers, they want to quit, but they can't. we're talking about a substance that is more addictive and harder to quit than heroin here.

i see a lot of talk about intelligence, that it isn't intelligent to smoke. i would agree but i have a question for the non-smokers here: how many of you smoke marijuana on a regular or semi-regular basis? you do realize that weed smoke is just as damaging to your lungs and your health as cigarettes, right? people like Militant, who talk about how much they enjoy smoking, are in the minority. most smokers know what they are doing to themselves and want to quit. hell, i've tried to quit more times than i can count, but i still smoke, and i'm still trying to at least cut down or quit altogether.

the one thing that surprises me is how quickly smoking turned from something that was accepted, to non smokers treating smokers as though they were lepers or some shit. in the US, the MPAA is seriously considering making smoking a guideline when rating movies. so if a film that would normally be rated pg-13 has a scene with smoking in it, or characters that are seen smoking, the film will get an R rating, which is the most ridiculous thing to me. sex and violence? sure! people smoking in movies? hell no, we have to think of the children!

i know thats ridiculous. but see the problem is why people start smoking. to look cool? why the hell do you need to smoke to look cool? also i never saw the point of smoking. you smoke weed you get high. you smoke a cigarette, what does it give you? i've smoked cigs for a month and quit cause i felt it was pointless to do so. it didn't give me anything.

i don't really smoke cigarettes, but i smoke hash though, which i guess isn't any better. i used to smoke, and smoke a few days a week. but i'm not getting into the hash argument because it's not like i'm gonna quit because of anything any of you say to me anyway.

i agree that smoking is a highly unintelligent thing to do, but i also like to think that people are different, and that people who are easily obsessive/more prone to addiction actually have a way harder time letting go of habits like smoking than other people. it's a fact that people with a troubled history in one way or another are more prone to addiction than people who have not been as troubled. the way i look at it, there are two types of people. there are the people who are thinkers. they are self-conscious and reflective and spend the majority of their lives trying to figure it out rather than living it. these are the people who turn into emos, loners, bitter old men. then there are the people who normally live healthy lives, people who have a big social network, hobbies that they enjoy, people who go out there and do it. i think the two different types of people think very differently about things like a cigarette addiction.

maybe some time i'll have a series of thoughts that leads me to deciding i'm gonna quit smoking. if that happens, i'll have the proper motivation. if i just quit now because it's not healthy, i'm gonna obsess about it so much that i will actually enjoy life less. i really believe i will. i smoke because right now i want to smoke, and one day maybe i will want something different, but like.. that's all i can say lol. to the people who are arguing against smoking here.. i'm not really trying to take you on, i wanted to sort of come off as a little neutral, but what do you want the smokers to say then? that you are right, and then quit smoking? cause i really don't see that happening :( lol

but see, you were never addicted. once you are addicted, well it's hard to explain what it does to you, but it is something. sure you don't get high, but you get something from it all right.

and as for looking cool, we're talking about young impressionable teenagers. if most of the "cool kids" at school smoke (which was the case when i went to school, and is probably still the case now), a lot of kids will do it to fit in, to try to be like the cool kids. i never said it was logical or that it made sense, but it does happen that way a lot.

as kids we didn't feel cool smoking, shit, we used to hide while doing it. it was exciting though, which is why a lot of kids start smoking. excitement, not to look cool. also, for the ones that actually don't do it for the excitement, it's not about looking cool, it's about wanting to feel like an adult, something every child desires. but then of course there's a few kids who do it to look cool. losers.

that's a good point there, the grownup aspect. a lot of kids want to act grownup, and they see so many adults smoking, so they figure "why not?" and then there's the whole hypocritical factor. my parents both smoked, and as a little kid they would always tell me never to smoke, it's bad for you. but to me, they are smoking, they don't look unhealthy, so it can't be that bad right? monkey see, monkey do.

i do know what an addiction is though. i was addicted to ecstasy 3 years ago. if i wasn't on it, i was constantly talking about it and making plans to get some and to take some. but when i got my bf i stopped the day after. it was hard, but its okay. then i got into weed and stopped 10 months ago for school. some people are able to stop and start back years later and some people are simply not capable of it.

so yeah i know smoking must be hard cause i've seen my cousin who was coughing blood (she's now 28 only) 2 years ago so she stopped and a few months after she started smoking again because she needed. physical addiction is harder than psychological. and cigs are both. and people have habits with cigs. they take one after a coffee, at their breaks, etc.

the problem of smoking if how it starts. see my parents are both hardcore smokers and i'm not one. but i know that younger i used to take fries, put ketchup at the end and pretend to smoke. campaigns should prevent new kids from smoking and not stop the older from doing so.
