What do you think of the upcoming Sony Tablets?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vI9TZ6yTU44

I like the S1 (the one to the left). It's based on dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 and comes with Android 3.0 from all I know. Looks interesting though and it's from Sony, so it might be good if the price is right. Weird because they are Playstation certified, might mean exclusive games.

Bad thing is that they were announced quite a long time ago.
Considering that Sony are struggling with their logistics chains and the fact that they have custom Sony UI I doubt that it'll be as great as it'd have been if they released it back in April. It doesn't come with 3.1 and Ice-cream ready features and updates will probably come late anyway. Still looks good though:

New Facebook update. Make sure you get it. I have a feeling the Android app has been interfering with me getting my Facebook notifications on my computer. People will reply or like something of mine, but sometimes there will be no record of it on my phone or my computer.

It's weird

How much longer do you think the Nexus One will be supported? I mean in terms of being the Google Experience phone alongside the Nexus S? I can get one unlocked for $269 but if I get it now and it stops getting dibs on the updates as a dev phone by December, then... it'll be kinda dumb. Then it's just a Desire.

Just need an inexpensive GSM phone for 24 months. I was looking on Newegg and the GS2 is $649 or so, unlocked. Not surprising but fuck, that's a lot.

So Nokia are failing hard, very hard. For the first time ever they are no longer the biggest smartphone manufacturer. Their marketshare has fallen from 38.1% to 15.2%.

I'm not sure. On one hand it should be supported longer because it's a Google experience phone, it gets the vanilla version of Android which is the easiest one to port and if any older gen Android will get an Android update then Nexus One should too.
On another hand it wasn't really popular globally. But I think it should get updates until its hardware is good enough.

A Galaxy Tab 10.1 is merely listed as having a 1 Ghz processor and no mention is made of the GPU. I'm assuming it's Samsung's amazing ones?

Better than the Tegra 2 in the XOOM?

Ok, but the hardware will only be good enough, possibly, until Ice Cream is released, right? After that, isn't it kinda pushing it? This is a 1 Ghz processor we're talking about here, with not a ton of RAM. You'd think something would have to give since most new phones now are dual-cores sporting 1 Ghz RAM or more.

The one in Galaxy S2 is a bit better than the Tegra 2, but if I remember right the 10.1 packs Tegra 2 (which is awesome too).
It's just that 10.1 is overall better than the Xoom. Like most reviews state, it just feels much better and for the same speed (on paper) it works better and smoother than the Xoom.
Alongside Acer Iconia A500 the 10.1 is the best Android tablet.

Hard to say. It's 1ghz but it's a bit older-gen Snapdragon. However there are many single core phones released these days too and I think that it won't change fast. I doubt that Android will require 2 cores anytime soon. Even Windows 7 would run smoothly on a 1ghz Snapdragon.

Well, Android may not need to "require" dual-cores in order for single cores to really have a crippled experience. My Eris (Hero) got 2.1 and it blew because the hardware sucked balls and could not handle both Sense and Vanilla Android, even when Sense was disabled.

Just because the N1 will have "4.0" or whatever ICS will be, doesn't mean it won't be lacking most of the cool features because minimum requirements may not be met. We don't know these features, but that doesn't change the fact that one would feel like shit if their N1 was no longer powerful enough to run it.

if the Nexus S is an option, by the time Ice Cream Sandwich comes out, that would be much cheaper and you'd expect it to be able to run it smoothly without any performance lagging or faults.

i remember with the G1, it was considered impossible to run Android 2.1 (Eclair) on it because the most it was officially supported to was Donut (1.6). On top of that, there was not enough on-board memory to flash Eclair, it just wasn't physically possible. However, CyanogenMod found a partition within the memory and were able to unlock it and repartition the memory so that it would have more capacity and a full Eclair ROM could be flashed. Months later there was FroYo - who'd have thought it.

Anyway, my point is that when phones become older there are certain mods you can do to increase your phones compatibility and longevity. I remember the G1 days (on Android 1.5) when you could use your SD Card memory for RAM, to make the phone operate faster.

Is 2.3.4 still the most up-to-date software for Android?

Also, the new market app still didn't come OTA. Pissing me off. too lazy to download manually.

I was typing my last response on the shitter, Masta. I forgot to give some more background info. on my question.

I was just messing around with the tablets at a display. I used the Iconia, as well as the Tab 10.1, and the TouchPad. My sister was all over the PlayBook simply because of the BlackBerry name. But she's young and doesn't know.

It's kinda weird they omitted the "Tegra 2" from the info card on the 10.1. It simply said "1Ghz processor" whereas the Iconia and XOOM had Tegra 2 all over it. Endorsing one over the other?

I used them and it seem the 10.1 was much snappier. The store didn't have a network connection (not even WiFi) and so I was limited to simply moving between the menus and nothing else. Still, opening up programs was quick and smooth. I really think I could lose the iPod Touch I have and move to a tablet now. The only time I take the iPod out is for flights and also it's integrated into my car through USB. I'd miss the later with a huge-ass tablet, and if i didn't get an iPad, I'd lose out on iOS-exclusive apps (which I use a good bit). But the pros would be a music and movie player for the flights and possible integration in to classes in med school. I know they're making a huge switch in that direction, where a tablet would be useful in the exam room or even the classroom over a notebook.

The thing is, I have a feeling tablet technology will move at the same rate as phones did. It seem it was 528Mhz CPUS for a year and a half before the jump to 1 Ghz was a big deal with the N1. Then it only got better. I feel like buying a XOOM would be like buying a G1, but come next Summer, we'll see tablets that are absolutely bonkers. And cheaper.

To put it into perspective, I've been out the phone market for 20 months. I've missed out on phones from the N1 to the Galaxy S2. And that's just until today. I still have four more months on contract. So possibly until the N3 (whenever that comes out, probably in time for the Holidays). That's a HUGE span of time. I know technology moves fast (exponentially) but it seems from the G1 to the Eris (which I got) it was still a stable increase. The N1 set off the rapid growth in technology and the Droid Incredible for Android adoption.

So I may just wait until the Droid Incredible equivalent of the tablet technology comes along and then just start looking for tablets, wait a bit, and then buy one.

No, 2.3.5 was released over a week ago. I remember reading about it and wondering if future version of CM would start incorporating it. Right now, we're still on 2.3.4.

What's the point of following Nexus S on Twitter if they don't tweet that shit? Fuck.

edit: well, apparently, it's only for Nexus S 4G. Like, 4G-related bug fixes, NFC support, etc.
