Selfish = bad. selfless = good.

But with most cases in life, selfish = you'll go far in life

Being selfless = you get taken advantage of by the selfish people

Who is to say that anyone is truly selfless though? Some people say they are selfless and may truly be, but at the same time, if they keep doing it, are they selfless still, or working on their image?

No one can be absolutely good or absolutely bad. But one can be somewhere on a good/bad spectrum, and we all are. Since good is that which supports well-being, the person who most supports well-being is the one who is most good. If on the whole you support well-being more than its opposite, you could be considered a good person, or good in comparison to someone who supports it less. (And if you eat meat, you are, as sheep say, baaad.)

For more on the scientific basis of good and bad, see my book: How Jokerman Determines Human Values.

I don't believe in selflessness. Here is my take: Being good is a matter of being taught to be good. People that are "bad" are unfortunate, not actually bad. People that are "good" are lucky, not actually good. I believe people are as good as convience allows them to, and being taught to be a dickshit makes it inconvenient to try and act like a goodguy.

If you live your life trying to make the world a better place, with compassion for others, that is good.

If you live your life solely for your own benefit, with no regard for others, that is bad.
