yea Meireles is a good player. i dont really rate the other two that highly but if Villa got money they could look at Meireles. different type of player to Milner though

his transfer dealings have been ok. did he sign Milner and YOung? also Dunne, Cueller, Friedel, Petrov and to a lesser extent Carew have been good signings.

MoN did make Villa stronger on the pitch, theres no denying that.

If I have to hazard a guess, he walked because he didnt get to build a team. The board wants to sell players MoN wants to keep, whereas at the same time the board will probably say to Mon that they should finish at least 4th or some shit like that. I think MoN wanted some wiggle room to build a consistent quality squad and really try for a top 4 finish, but the board wouldnt let him. I think thats why he quit.

That said, and having looked at that transferlist, lol @ Prem League prices.

Ridiculous.

Meireles. Isn't it funny Veloso and Moutinho were being touted around for £30m once?. Veloso joined Genoa, Moutinho joined Porto.

I didn't mean this transfer dealing haha..typo. I meant how do you guys rate MON's transfers? have they been a success or not.
Young and Carew who signed for villa on the same day definitely have, along with Petrov and Milner. Those are four of our key players, core of the squad. Dunne, Warnock, Cuellar and Collins have been fantastic. Luke Young has been a good versatile defender, Shorey played well before he was replaced with Warnock. NRC and Sidwell didnt have much impact on the squad (i always said £8.5m for NRC was wayy over the odds and he would just be a squad player). Davies is good but hasnt featured since his injury.

MON bought 14 first team players over 4 years. Average of 3 every season, not enough when you're already depleted on numbers. We've lost the likes of Mellberg, Shorey, Bouma, eventually Milner, Kevin Phillips, Angel, Sorensen.

The likes of Salifou and Routledge were in the reserves. So were players like Harry Forrester and Eric Lichaj.

what's your dad's view on the situation? is he glad with MON resignation? a few people are happy he's going but the majority are disheartened by the news. i am annoyed, frustrated, shocked amongst other feelings with the news.
I think he would have preferred Martin to stay. My dad knows Martin O'Neills old assistant manager from the Wycombe early days, so has followed him since a long time ago. And he is a good manager.

I think he is just disappointed that it has come now.

rumours going around now that Spurs were going to bid for Young and the owner wants to accept so O'Neill walked.
That's what I took from his resignation. We all knew about Milner, and it had been going on a while. Then we hear Spurs are after Young, then he resigns. If true, can't blame him.

Also that he couldn't use the funds for the whole Milner money.

What do you guys think of this transfer dealings anyway?

I think he has been poor in the transfer market. He didn't exactly unearth Milner or Young, and they weren't cheap buys. He bought well in defence and in goal.... But lacking attacking talent.

MON has never been sacked from a club and has always resigned.

if it was over transfer policies and money from sales being spent then the whole situation has been blown out of proportion. i think MON should have most of the money from the sale of milner to spend - we need to spend a little bit more to maintain our fighting position for the top 4 if not get those 2 or 3 players who could bring the quality and confidence to the side that has slipped up on their chances of a top 4 spot. maybe the whole situation is a lot more complex than money issues and the sale of milner and offers for young.

its taken this long for MON to come in and transform the whole villa squad, now with him gone and milner going its all falling apart with the new season just days away. not a good start. this is disastrous and the worst thing that could happen to us this season, even worse than milner leaving is MON resigning.

MON really motivated Downing also and brought him back stronger than ever, perhaps even better (thus far) than his days at Boro. let's see what happens....

I'd rather Kevin Macdonald stay in charge until we get a proper full time manager, not just a quick fix and then a sacking when the team is hanging around mid-table after 10 games.

Plus Villa still need to strengthen. Especially upfront. Maybe Nathan will get a chance now. Maybe Ireland will still come in.

let's see.

Brad Friedel announces that MON leaving was not anything to do with him. Some sources are speculating that he was on the move to Fulham. But that's all news to Brad, since he had no contact or involvement in any transfer with any club.

Martin Laursen is 50/1 to replace MON - Interesting.

The more I see of these issues. The more respect I have for Sir Alex. He obviously isn't spending due to financial restraints within the club. He sold Ronaldo for 80 Million and spent very little of it. He spent a small amount again this year, on players with potential. And he never speaks out against the club or it's owners. I think if he really wanted a player they'd give him funds. But most clubs have changed their business model and are investing in youth.

Nice to see Sir Alex praised :p Fuck Millwall btw

But Andy Gray made that comment today, O'Neill as much as I love him it seems he just threw the toys out the pram. He has been given money since he went there, £90m+. Thats a hell of a lot more than a lot of other clubs.

we spent around £80m two seasons ago in the summer transfer window. only man city spent more than us. we did get a bit of it back after sales of other players. but that was our ambition, we were spending. MON always did have financial backing although there may have been more restraints this season. I can see both points of view, in a neutral way.
I think the board at the club have been exceptional and managed the club properly, especially when i look at other foreign owners such as mike ashley and hicks and gillet. randy lerner could have been one of those who came in and ruined the club. he wasnt and had their best interests at heart. in fact he lived in england for the majority of his life and mentioned in an interview that he took villa to heart years before.

the cleveland browns fans think lerner spends too much time with aston villa rather than the browns and so they are upset at that.

villa have spent a lot. even people say doug ellis never spent money he did. but like randy lerner he is keeping the club stable, and longevity and continuation is always a priority otherwise we will have debts on our hands like united, arsenal, liverpool, portsmouth, leeds, southampton and co. stability is a key issue.

With FxPro we have our biggest sponsorship deal in history. we've had several new sponsors this season and things are moving on with the club, the FxPro partnership will bring more money and financial backing to the club so that should be less of an issue.

one thing i truly respect lerner for doing is always giving a helping hand to charities and his work involving aston villa with the community. that goes for the directors behind the club too.

which reminds me, new villa website today.
