If you have a proper Windows license, you really can't go wrong with Microsoft Security Essentials. It's never let me down.

I switched to it from NOD32 which was giving me BSOD's with Windows 7. I'm very pleased with MSE, it has a lot of features, it's database updates every day and it's memory/CPU footprint is smaller than NOD32 also.

You can get it here:

Nod32. It's what I use, and what they use at my work. It's hands-down the best I've used. Also, after a year of usage, you get better prices if you renew with them. For example, I just paid 70$ for 2year.. or was it 55$ ... Either way...

ESET - Antivirus Software with Spyware and Malware Protection

Here's the site. I got the Anti-virus/malware/spyware combo. Well worth it. I've been using it for a good 3-4 yrs and I haven't had any viruses or anything.

It really depends though in the end what you like.

Seriously Avira Antivir is the best one. It has the highest detection rate and is the most consistent one. It's way superior to NOD32 and uses only slightly more resources. It's also very user-friendly.

yes. It's best in many tests and I also personally find it the best too.
It gets it worst review for its user interface but personally I like it. It's simple, works fast and doesn't drain much resources.

But I don't know if it's worth paying for extra features. Depends on what you need. It has the same engine and detection rate. However for firewall and some other stuff you have to pay more than 20 - you have to buy "Security suite" which is more than premium.
Premium gives you some email protection, faster update download servers (free are fast enough though) etc.
However the free antivirus itself was enough to keep me virus free. From time to time I get a pop-up that I have a virus, I delete it and have no problems. Since I use it I never had any problems with Viruses.
