Yeah, I mean the system needs to be futureproof so that was what I was leaning towards. Are you using Pro Tools HD or LE? Also did you build the system yourself or go with someone like Dell or HP? I saw a great HP system running a 9xx processor with 8GB RAM but HP are only shipping it in the US and Canada at the moment. I don't mind getting it shipped to a friend in the US and get them to send it but obviously it'd be easier to get something built and shipped here in the UK. I think the Dell XPS 9000 had similar spec as well but they've discontinued them I think.

okay so if i wanted to have a Win7 64-bit OS would these be okay (fast and good value for money):

1TB HDD
AMD Athlon/Phenom II (which athlon/phenom II? X4?)
4GB RAM

Which HD graphics card (Nvidia or Raedon?) and motherboard would you recommend for these?

im looking at best performance for a good value. so dont want to spend too much. i saw that rukas said quad core would be super fast on windows 7.

Is this okay? It is a bit pricey though at £847 (£22.51 p/m).

Any ideas on how i can reduce costs and keep it fast, efficient and HD? I just added the Windows 7 64 bit OS to see the cost. Ive looked online to try and download it but all the file hosting sites have removed the links. also i have a download limit on my broadband of 2GB a month, so it would take several months to get hold of windows 7 and then see if it even activates.

Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse costs £36;
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit costs £108

If i can get the OS downloaded/cracked and i could perhaps use my current wired keyboard and mouse...

I've taken out the DVD-RW options because i could open the new one up and install the ones i already have at home.

Is 600W PSU suitable for those specs? Bearing in mind the HD Graphics card and processors requires a certain amount of power. Also, the cooling, will it overheat with that standard cooler or is that okay?

I had it running LE but am upgrading to HD this weekend. Just backing up now in case something goes crazy, even though it shouldnt. Just a HD2 rig, I will still be running a LOT of RTAS plugins so shouldnt realistically need anything more than that.

I built it myself. It's pretty easy.

Change the graphics card. It sucks balls big time and I'm worried that you'll have to pay much more to get a half-decent one. New games are not playable on it even in 1024x768 resolution:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-5450-review/9
600W PSU is even too much but I'd use a different company. Search for Chieftec - not that expensive but very good and 500-560W would easily be enough.
This one you picked might not be too reliable.
Processor hmm is this the best value for money there? Here there are better ones in a similar price (or almost as good but cheaper).
Very good deal you have there on that Display. It's just that newest, demanding games won't run very well in full hd - they would need a higher end PC. On the other hand most Displays in this size are 1680x1050 which is enough and better for gaming BUT 16:10 ratio is better for movies than 16:9. And games look way worse in other resolutions than its native resolution on LCDs.
Other than that it's a TN panel with overdrive so response times should be top notch.

Which site did you use for that configuration? I might check it out and check their prices.

what im thinking now is, do i really even need HD? (its just a luxury). i would like a sharp, crisp image.

i can save on a hd monitor. perhaps just get a good widescreen one.

im mainly using the pc for internet, multimedia (music, video, pictures), software and education. i wont be downloading hd movies.

also, if i will watch hd movies i will be watching them on a tv perhaps using a playstation or blu-ray player.

i want this pc to be smooth, quick and reliable for many years.

i dont know if i even need the xp emulator mode in windows 7 professional. im just thinking about certain softwares not being compatible.

I have absolutely no idea how it came up to be this expensive. I took about 2 minutes picking parts (they don't have a big choice btw) and came out with something.

Look at this:

Case STYLISH PIANO BLACK FUSION CASE inc. 2 FRONT USB
Processor (CPU) AMD PHENOM II X2 550 SOCKET AM3 (3.10GHz/6MB CACHE) - BLACK EDITION
Motherboard ASUS® M4A78LT-M LE: DDR3, S-ATA II, 1 x PCIe x16, 1 x PCIe x1, 2 x PCI
Memory (RAM) 4GB CORSAIR DDR3 DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz - LIFETIME WARRANTY!
Graphics Card 1GB ATI RADEON™ HD 5770 PCI EXPRESS - DirectX® 11
2nd Graphics Card NONE
Memory - 1st Hard Disk 640GB WD CAVIAR GREEN WD6400AARS, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE
2nd Hard Disk NONE
RAID (HDD 1 & 2) NONE
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive NONE
2nd DVD/BLU-RAY Drive NONE
Memory Card Reader INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (READS XD, MS, CF, SD, etc)
Power Supply & Case Cooling CORSAIR 650W PSU (TX650) 80+ ULTRA QUIET (£69)
Processor Cooling STANDARD AMD CPU COOLER
Sound Card ONBOARD 8 CHANNEL (7.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Facilities ONBOARD 10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT
USB Options 4 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL (MIN 2 FRONT PORTS) AS STANDARD
Modem NONE, I WILL BE USING BROADBAND
Floppy Disk Drive NONE
Firewire & Video Editing NONE
TV Card NONE
Operating System Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit - inc DVD & Licence (£79)
Office Software FREE 60 Day Trial of Microsoft® Office® 2007 Professional Edition
Anti-Virus MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS - Free Basic Protection
Monitor NONE
2nd Monitor NONE
DVI Cable NONE
GeForce 3D Vision NONE
Keyboard & Mouse NONE
Mouse NONE
Speakers NONE
Webcam NONE
Headsets (VOIP) NONE
Surge Protection NONE
Printer NONE
External Hard Drive NONE
Home Installation NONE
Warranty 1 Year Return-to-Base incl 1st Month Free Collect & Return
Delivery STANDARD INSURED DELIVERY TO UK MAINLAND (MON-FRI)
Build Time Standard Build - Approximately 7 to 9 working days
Quantity 1

£532.77 ex VAT.

£626 inc VAT and Delivery.

And it's a very good multimedia computer that will handle top notch games.
I'm not sure about quality and noise since they don't mention for example companies making these video cards but generally this model is very good (above mid-end).

Oh and I suggest getting a PC display elsewhere. This one is very nice if you want full HD:
Samsung P2350 23" Wide High Definition LCD Monitor: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

And this one if you don't:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-SM2...5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1270752307&sr=1-5

You absolutely don't have to worry about image sharpness and such. The second one is probably a bit superior if it comes to image quality alone (and 16:10 is more comfortable to work with than 16:9).

but doesnt AMD stay cooler and run more efficiently? The same sort of machine, but with the i5 is approx £700. This is too pricey. I'm looking more at £500-£600 max. Lots of storage, quick machine.

Also, masta. would the Athlon II Quad-core processor be fast on win 7? i wouldnt be gaming much on it. maybe the odd occassion (rarely). more of a playstation gamer than pc. pc for sega and snes emulators.

im just thinking if my uncle can do this, maybe he could do it cheaper if he can. but i can understand he would want to make some profit. using the same casing could save me some money.

also i could take out the 184GB HDD from my current machine and use it as a primary HDD for the OS; and the 500GB-1TB one as secondary. He found a good Samsung 1TB @ 5400rpm which works more efficiently and better than most 7200rpm HDDs (a while back).

Im unsure about Nvidia GeForce or ATI Radeon

edit: i found this. and i think the radeon gpu seems more energy efficient, but the geforce gpu is cheaper to buy:

AMD platform is cheaper in this price range.
Phenom x2 would be better than Athlon x4 because it's cheaper and fast too. If you can get Athlon x4 for a similar price then go for it though.
Go for the ATI Radeon 5770 - a VERY good card for its price and you can play anything with it.

just downlaoded the stuff for win7 home premium 64 bit. if this installs on my laptop (vista 32bit) will it mess it up or be sluggish?

i have 2GB RAM, intel core 2 duo, acer aspire 5920

check the specs:
Acer Aspire 5920 Specs, Laptop Reviews on CNET UK
No it will be fine with 2GB of RAM unless you intend to play some heavy games etc, as Cooper said the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems is the width of the address buses.

most programs are written for 32 bit, which is why i was wondering whether running in on a 64 bit OS would mean slow performance on only 2GB RAM. games would probably work slow on that laptop anyway. the rating is 3.1 i think.

gaming - depend mostly on video card which probably sucks on that laptop.

Windows 7 is way less demanding than Vista - even 64 bit. I have it working on my laptop with 1gb of ram without problems. Boots faster than XP did.

A 64 bit system still runs 32bit apps normally but 64 bit apps work better. A 32 bit system doesn't run 64 bit apps if they don't have a 32 bit version.

^^ thanks. so of course its like a PS2 cannot play PS3 games, but a PS3 can play PS2 and PS3 games.

I hope to install this on mine and maybe my brothers laptop. then my pc (whenever i get it).

i shall back everything up and then see what i can do. would those ISO images allow for me to install it on multiple systems? im just thinking, because a product key wasn't provided with it form the above website.

will it lock the machine down?

You can install it from one disk/iso without problems. You can use it for some time without providing a serial key. Then each machine needs an unique serial number unless you have a license for multiple machines.
