Im disappointed.

At this point I would rather they released a touchscreen netbook or macbook. The fact they admit you need to buy a keyboard attachment is worrying.

My major two gripes with it are no camera (although that will, Im sure, come with later editions) and no multitasking.

I cant have my twitter running while reading an ebook or browsing the net? That is just silly.

I think what is happening though is that Apple has shown a crippled version running the current iPhone OS because they dont want to give away the iPhone 4 OS yet but when that is announced/released it will be incorporated into the iPad (terrible name).

So basically, I will wait to buy this and get the 2nd gen one with camera and new OS.

^lol, writing on a tablet with a stylus is not practical at all. The technology failed.
I don't mean handwriting recognition but simply writing down some notes. That's what students do at times and that's what I was used to with my PDA.
Also, many people use tablets for drawing.

Salty, what do you think of this device overall? Is it something you plan to purchase, and if so, why?
I will buy one. Too bad Voice plans still exist in this world. That's the only thing I need on my iPhone once I have this tablet. I have a feeling that I won't be buying laptops ever again. I've used an iPhone for the past 2 years. I know this tablet will get lots of milage.

I was expecting iPhone OS4 with crazy new touch controls so I am slightly disappointed with the minimal interface changes.

For me, one of the things I would consider is carrying it. What I like about smart-phones is that I can carry them in my pocket. But with this thing, it's too thin/light to warrant a backpack, and too big to put into a piece of clothing.
Exactly. This thing looks flimsy enough that you'd risk damaging it in a backpack. I do not get how people intend to carry this thing around.....and if you're not going to carry it around (some people will argue that it's meant to be a stay at-home device) then why put a 3G radio in it? I don't foresee many people paying the extra amount for the 3G variant. Hell in the rare occasions when I'm out and about with my laptop and there's no wifi, I just tether my data connection from my phone.

I don't foresee people paying for TWO data connections, one for their smartphone and one for their tablet. Just.not.gonna.happen.

But one thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is that supposedly it has a 10 hour battery life and that you can watch like 5-6 feature films before it dies. That would be a lifesaver on airplane flights for the weak among us who can't read books for 10 hours.
Every long flight I've been on in the past year has had USB sockets and mains sockets built into the seats so that you can charge your smartphone and laptop that way anyway.

Also another fail is that the iPad doesn't support Widescreen. The display is 4:3 only. I mean come the fuck on. That just cripples the ability to watch movies anyway.

I will buy one. Too bad Voice plans still exist in this world. That's the only thing I need on my iPhone once I have this tablet.
Google is working on that. They bought out Gizmo5 (VOIP company) to integrate it with Google Voice, and I have no doubt they will at some point release a phone that you can buy and use without needing a voice plan. Too bad Apple blocked Google Voice from the App Store because they're shit scared of Google taking over even more of their core services, but we've discussed that to death already. However all is not lost! You can now use the HTML5 based web app for Google Voice on your iPhone, and from what I hear, many people are doing that already since it was released a couple of days ago.

And proves that it's just a slightly more advanced e-book reader (book format) ;)
The price is not 1000$ probably because they'll charge like 10$ for an e-book/magazine and probably that's also where they're trying to rip people off.

True. They're trying to compete with Amazon but Apple aren't a book distributor and won't be able to offer as good prices.

Also, Google is already fucking them here. The aim of the Google Books project (Google Books) is to digitally reproduce as much content (books and magazines) as possible.....here's the kicker..........FOR FREE.

Android tablet with integrated Google Books application and as much free content as you can get your hands on? See ya later, Apple.

I bet you're quick to bark at an official who punishes those that violate copyright laws because paying for music is a rip off and everyone has a god given right to free stuff.

I don't get why people want it to have camera?

For quick snapshots, use your phone. For proper photos use a proper camera? Unless your phone is an iPhone, then your camera sucks.

Maths sucks

Engineering mathematics - Google Books

The only maths book you'll ever need :)
Yeah I also hate maths but have to study for my exams though. I also have shitloads of things to solve and couldn't find how to do it in most books. My professor gave me a hint to find a book I couldn't find anywhere and it's on Google Books.

I think they want it for video chat.

Cameras on Iphones suck really hard.

Still most Polish books are unavailable to browse but a lot of them are. Especially those more popular. That's pretty groundbreaking. I didn't even know that I could just read them like that there. Who needs to buy books then? Okay if you really like one then buy one but I won't ever buy a book just to study if it's there.

I bet you're quick to bark at an official who punishes those that violate copyright laws because paying for music is a rip off and everyone has a god given right to free stuff.
Yeah I'm really against those who "punish for violating copyright laws" but mostly for the way they are doing it. It's insane. Also I'm all for reasonable prices. If a real magazine costs 3$ a rational man would get it in its digital form mainly because it should be cheaper as they don't have to waste paper, print etc.

carrying around a 10inch device for that purpose is another story in itself though.

They rip people off by selling them average hardware, with fancy UI's at inflated prices.

I guess people want a camera for video chats so they could use it for Skype/Windows Live etc. It's hard for me to imagine taking pictures with a device like this.

People tend to compare inches and bytes and think they are getting a better deal for their inferior machines, actually.
That's very inaccurate but yeah - smart people compare possibilities a certain thing gives you before buying. If your TV has a better panel, drains less energy all other technical specs are superior there's something wrong with you if you decide to buy a worse and more expensive TV for your house.
If you're brainwashed into thinking that a technically inferior device is in fact superior there's something wrong there.

I actually think what Apple's doing is a plus for the print industry but if you want corporate sponsorships to ruin journalistic integrity in exchange for reasonable prices - then go right ahead. :)

Obviously, Apple will offer competitive pricing on the e-books and digital format magazines/newspapers it sells.

You should hold off till 3rd gen, like how people held off with iPhones.
