Do you believe in genuinely evil people?

I often hear that there are good people and then there are evil people. That not everyone is good. Do you believe that there is a group of people who are genuinely bad? Who do bad things just for the sake of it?
I always thought of "bad" as doing something selfish for your own gain not caring about morals and the potential harm it might cause (aka being a selfish dick).
When most people think "a bad person" they either mention the likes of Hitler, an annoying selfish classmate etc. However these people performed evil acts as a way to reach something that was good in their mind or just thought that they are not doing anything bad while in fact doing it, they could perceive things in a totally different way than we do. Some people don't understand that they are doing bad things since they don't have same morals.

Do you know anyone who is genuinely "evil"? Someone who does bad things, is aware of doing so and is happy about it?
I have to confess that I've never encountered anyone like that.

A random "middle of the night" thread btw.

i dont think i have encountered anyone. though we could all say that revenge is a huge temptation for good people to commit such evil actions. they know what they are doing is wrong but they willingly choose to go ahead with the course of action they take in order to satifsy their desire to "even the odds".

Many things are taken into account when someone does something horrible. Childhood, genetics, treatment in society, influences, etc.

But, man .... sometimes you hear about people and just have to wonder if it's just genuine evil, especially pedophile/child murderers.

I guess bad people are those that do bad things within their own moral perception and capabilities.
Yeah and I wonder if such people exist.

I often hear that child molesters/killers were described as casual good guys. It's just that "do it" thoughts won with their conscience at some point and definitely some other factors contributed to that like Flipmo said.

Sure I do. But in their head they think they are right and that what they are doing is good. I think people who are genuinely evil think they are genuinely good.

meh, I've met people that do a lot of wrong, and they know what they do is wrong. Yet they don't stop. Some claim they want to stop or it was a mistake, others dont give a fuck.

so I guess I could say I've met genuinely evil people. Not to say that they dont have other dimensions to their personality. It's not like they're pure evil. But its kinda fucked up, cuz I've seen people do 'evil' shit habitually. It wont even benefit them in anyway, they just do it.

Annd I've also met those that do wrong but really dont think they're doing anything wrong at all.. they just have dumb ass justifications for everything.

Genuinely evil? No. Mean people, sure, assholes, sure. But really evil bastards? No, you'd have to be pretty cold-hearted to qualify for that one imo.

I don't think evil exists as a trait with which you are born. I believe it's mostly the environment that shapes you. It's no wonder the majority of sexual predators were abused as a child, just to throw in an example.

If you're constantly made to believe that non-believers must die, after 40 years you too are a terrorist. But it doesn't mean young Osama Bin Laden was an evil baby.

Don't think good/evil exists. And good/bad is too dependent on your view. I guess bad people are those that do bad things within their own moral perception and capabilities.
This is a good point. By most standards.. a rapist would be considered "evil" or "bad" but in the Christian bible.. rape is often condoned.

So if a bible fanatic read something like the below example and took it literally.. he may think raping someone was the correct way to handle a situation. In that case.. is he a bad person? He is doing what his god tells him and what he thinks is right. So to him he will never be bad. But to others he will be. It's very subjective.

(Rape I.E. (2 Samuel 12:11-14 NAB)

Thus says the Lord: 'I will bring evil upon you out of your own house. I will take your wives [plural] while you live to see it, and will give them to your neighbor. He shall lie with your wives in broad daylight.")

Isn't that quote in relation to one of David's sons that raped his half-sister? and it's a sort of eye-for-an-eye punishment? Unless my memory slips me.

Either way, good point.
