yeah, it's just that personally I'm not into bootlegging software. I like my operating system to be original, especially if it's for free anyway :).

I have been using the beta for months now. Yesterday I installed the final version on my work laptop because we have a licensing agreement and we get it early! I really like it and the final build is ever better.

masta, let me school you on something.

Most likely, carmi doesn't get to download at no charge for the same reason that I don't get to download at no charge at my university. We're not enrolled in IT-related coursework. I could have downloaded it if it was offered for free in the spring when I was taking information systems and ops mgmt courses but not now. You're different because your entire school is an IT school, right? Here and most likely at carmi's university, IT/computer science are just one or two depts out of plenty.
i think that's what it is.

i agree for original OS.

but i have a question, so now RTM is the retail version right? so how come some people have it already, is it original or bootleg? i thought it was only out as of october. i don't see the point of installing the RC (as my friend suggested me to do) as the retail version is out soon. i figure i might as well buy it and get rid of vista asap.

RTM means 'Ready to manufacture'. It's the very same version that gets copied and packed right now to be ready to hit the stores in October. It's also being preinstalled on laptops so people will be able to buy laptops with Win 7 on 23th October.
It's already available on MSDN and Technet so for example software developers can already write and test their programs on Windows 7 so users will already be able to get Windows 7 optimized software as soon as they buy the system. It leaked from MSDN and is all over the net right now - that's how most people got it.

^oh okay. i was wondering why you had the RTM version so early and original.

i think i'm going to install the RC version til the RTM version hits stands in october. my vista recovery cds aren't working and quite frankly i might as well install rc and then buy retail instead of ordering the recovery cds.

I'm not sure but probably if you install the RC version of Windows 7 now you will have to format your hard drive again before installing the retail version.
There's another way but it's more complicated:
How To Upgrade Windows 7 RC To RTM

and actually it's better to format and do a clean install anyway.

i'd do a back up and a clean install. no issue there. :) it's just the original win 7 (not cracked) is pricey, $230 for the family version, $350 for the ultimate version.

You should have ordered it a month ago Carm.. Futureshop had a pre-order for it, 80$ lol.

Anyways, my friend will crack it for me eventually, and I'll use it

No, you have to buy a Family pack to be able to install it on more than one PC:
Microsoft prices Windows 7 family pack | Beyond Binary - CNET News

However I've read that it's quite confusing and crazy.. 119$ is the upgrade if you already have Vista installed lol They didn't even mention that on their official site.

Here's the version you have to buy if you want to install from the start without having Vista:
Windows 7 Home Premium Full - Buy and download from Microsoft Store
still cheaper than $229 from futureshop lol

family pack sucks tho as it's only available as an upgrade. if it was worth it i would have bought it and updated the desktop computrt i am currently using + my sister's laptop
