Situation

First of all i want people that have a good knowledge of playing sports and know what its like to play on sports teams to respond.

I play a sport here called hurling. ive played it for years now. Im pretty average, nothing special and i know this and i dont play at a very high level. I am much better at soccer.

Anyway, i have been training pretty hard since March. id say have only missed maybe 2 or 3 sessions. In the games i have played in, i have done pretty well. So last saturday was our first championship game. Im not on the starting team. i didnt expect to be. I had a hamstring injury a few weeks back and missed some games. the team has been pretty much the same ever since. I did, however, expect to come on at some stage. So the game begins and we are playing poorly. A lot of guys are playing shit. some of which shouldn't be playing in the first place but are on the team because of who they are or past reputation. The game goes on and i never get called to go on. Another guy who only started training 3 weeks before championship gets on. Now im furious at this point. Its not like this guy is very good either. we are about the same. Im training all year but i dont get on but this guy trains for 3 weeks and does. Now this was towards the end of the game and there are 2 or 3 other guys having poor games. One of our players shouts to the manager to make a switch but he responds with "who would you suggest?" as he glances back to the subs bench. now this drove me mad because he's basically saying that me and the other subs are no good. Ask anyone that goes to our games and they'll say that i should at least be coming on as a sub. so the game ends and we are beaten. I just stormed out of the dressing room after the game before the manager had his talk.

So fast forward to today , and i get a text from the manager about training. We always get a text to tell us when training is on. so i replied with "i wonder what the point in training and putting in effort is if a guy can show up 3 weeks before the game and get on?". i got no reponse, so i have a feeling that i will get an earful in training later.

so do you think my reaction is justified? this team is just full of politics and bullshit. has been for the past 5 years now.I thought it would be different with this manager though and got the impression it would be all year but its just the same old bullshit. I was half thinking of just quitting but i need the training to keep fit and in shape. i just feel as if i have no chance of getting on even though i should be and its because of personal grudges and popularity not ability to play the sport.

You didn't overreact, the manager should've at least given you a reason for not bringing you on.

But the best thing to do is confront him outright (but polite). Just go up to him and say "look ive been working my ass off in training the last year, I'm not brilliant but when there's a need you don't even bring me on but someone who only trained for 3 weeks. you can understand im pissed".

true. id have no problem when its someone that is better than me or has been training all year but this guy just shows up when it suits him with a lazy attitude towards training and gets on.

From the brief insight you gave us, your manager seems like a clueless one. I mean what kind of response is "Who would you suggest?", he's the fecking manager it should be him making them calls.
I wouldn't take what happened personally, it's rather due to the manager being inept at what he does.

We had a similar problem a few years ago on our Football team where the Manager always picked his son and his two friends in the starting eleven, even though they often missed training ,turned up for games hungover and the fact there were better more dedicated players sitting on the bench week in week out.

Luckily for us, we could complain to the secretary / treasurer of the club, in the end the Manager was replaced.

I've been on a team and was better than others. But didn't get to start b/c the coach wanted to focus on next season, since the 'season' was over. Therfore, he decided to give the younger players more experience.

i was mad once because i was promised to come on as a sub when i used to play for my house team. because i was new i wasnt exactly going to be thrown in the starting line-up in a football (soccer) game. So i was promised to be put on, but they never kept the promise. How could i prove myself if i wasnt given the chance in that game?

I agree with Duke, confront your manager, politely. Show him you want it more than the other guy and be persuasive (not overly persuasive - you dont want to deter him or cause it to backfire on you).

Also, continue working hard in training and tell him to keep a close eye on your effort.

If he's as good as you after only three weeks of practice...

It's shitty and annoying, but that's life. Be a good sport about it or quit.
