"The Yankees were coming after me aggressively. We know George Steinbrenner's reputation", Said Damon.

"He always wants to have the best players, and I think he showed that tonight. He and Brian Cashman came after me hard," he said, referring to New York's general manager.

Damon fills a double void for the Yankees, giving them a speedy center fielder who can cover ground and a leadoff hitter to top a potent lineup that also includes Derek Jeter, Gary Sheffield, AL MVP Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui, Jason Giambi, Robinson Cano and Jorge Posada.

Agent Scott Boras had been seeking a seven-year contract for Damon. The offer Damon accepted was essentially the same as the deal Matsui agreed to with the Yankees last month.

"A good leadoff hitter is tough to find, and I think that New York just found the best leadoff hitter in the game," Damon told WBZ in Boston.

When Mike Myers finalized his contract with the Yankees last week, he gushed about the prospect of having Damon in New York's lineup.

"I would put the over/under on Damon scoring 125 runs, and I'd take the over any day of the week," Myers said. "I think the fans would absolutely love him here, just his hustle and his passion for the game, the way he goes about his business. I think he'll fit in great in this clubhouse.

But really I didn't see this coming at all, big surprise. Yanks have a potent lineup for sure, this is just, wow.

Cocky talking from johnny. he won a ring and thinks now he the shit and he the center of the attention. no, just come and play dont talk to much about yourself. Ichiro is the best leadoff hitter.

Damon had a better batting average, on base percentage and stolen base percentage in 2005 than Ichiro

however, alot of that was helped by Fenway, thats for sure

i think i just lost alotta respect for damon...i didnt like the red sox, but not cuz im a yanks fan.....i didnt hate em, but i didnt like them, but i saw the talent in them...it used to be ortiz, mann and damon that made watching the sox fun....but now, i dunno...

they got new peeps this year, and really good ones too...i'll be damned if loretta doesnt do amazing....

i dont think that by losing damon they really hurt themselves, as loretta, imo, is alot better....he gets hits, he gets on base, and he's good defensively....damon didnt have an arm, he got hits, but not as many....still a good player...

but still, im pissed at damon cuz he really gave his team the finger by going to the yanks...pedro did the same but just suggesting that he might sign with the yanks....

im telling you, money fucks up this game so much....if i were commissioner, i'd make salary based on performance....a quarter a hit or something....we'll see how cocky damon is afterwards....fuckin faggot..

so you get 50 dollars a year if your one of the few players who gets 200 hits in a season?

Pavano is the only dependable starter. Pavano is injury prone. Johnson's body is breaking down and is nearly 100 years old. You really expect Wang and Small to carry the Yankees deep into the playoffs?

Randy was still one of the top 5 pitchers in the AL last year; Small went 10-0; Wang is the fucking man, Mussina is decent (albiet over-rated)

I expect Randy to have a better year than last year, more Ks

and the Yankees lineup is far more lethal with Damon now. basically they're taking Tino/rubin Siera and replacing that with Johnny Damon, meaning the pitchers will have more of a margin for error

I'd take player with most stolen bases with low stolen percentage then a player with low stolen bases and higher stolen bases percentage. what you need stolen bases percentages numbers for? as long as he stoles a lot of bases fuck the stats. ichiro stole 33 from 41 and johnny 18 from 19. i'd rather have player keep attacking the base and gettin cought a lot but still gets a lot of stolen bases then a player whos worrying about his percentage numbers and attacks bases only sometimes.
over all ichiro has done more in last five years then johnny has. ichiro had little down season last year but still is the best leadoff hitter. not to mention defensively ichiro rips johnny apart and the arm he has.

You'd expect only Randy to be better then what he was last year thats only if he stays healthy like last year. mussina has no reason to get bettter. pavano hasen't shown what he can do so you cant count him. and you cant expect Wang and Small to go through same stretch like they did last year. so yanks pitching stuff is still questionable.
Damon signing wont help win. thats what they all saying when yanks first got Jiambi then Sheffield and then A-rod. and now you beleiving bringing another solid offensive player like Damon would help win the games if the pitching is questionable? dont think so. if a-rod the suppose best player in the baseball couldnt help beat pitching what makes you think Damon will? people gots to understand pitching wins it all. thats it and thats all. no matter who you bring if you dont have solid pitching you not good enough.

stop being such a pessimest dude, the Chisox and Bosox both got weaker this offseason and the Yankees got stronger, thats all it takes for a trip to the World Series

I'm not. i just seen yanks do this last four years and im not falling for this again for next year. they first went out and got Jiambi and thought they would win with offense=failed. then they got matsui same result, then sheffield same result, a-rod same result. and now Damon? yes yanks will be amazing offensively all year long but if they go with these five current starting pitchers they wont go any farther in playoffs because pitching wins championships thats what i believe in. im for the yanks no doubt hope they win but i dont think it happening if today started the season with this pitching.
btw, trip to the world series isnt the goal, winning the world series is.
