United Arab Emirates firm to operate six major U.S. ports

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration has approved a deal in which a United Arab Emirates company would operate six major ports in the United States.

A U.S. government panel has determined that the UAE firm, DP World, would not endanger national security.

DP World, based in Dubai, has offered $6.8 billion for the purchase of a British firm that operates the ports of Baltimore, Miami, New York, New Jersey, New Orleans and Philadelphia.

DP World intends to acquire the London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation [P&O] Co. The sale was expected to be approved on Monday.

The company said the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States "thoroughly reviewed the potential transaction and concluded they had no objection." The committee includes representatives from the departments of Treasury, Defense, Justice, Commerce, State and Homeland Security.

The United Arab Emirates has been described as a leading military ally of the United States. In 2005, the UAE acquired the first 10 of 80 F-16E/F Block 60 multi-role fighters in a $6.4 billion purchase.

But officials said the UAE has not fully responded to repeated appeals from the Treasury Department to halt money-laundering activities exploited by Al Qaida and aligned groups. They said that for years Dubai served as a base for Al Qaida operatives, including those who destroyed the World Trade Center and a Pentagon wing in 2001.

"America's busiest ports are vital to our economy and to the international economy, and that is why they remain top terrorist targets," Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, said. "Just as we would not outsource military operations or law enforcement duties, we should be very careful before we outsource such sensitive homeland security duties."

Let me get this straight.

We've OUTSOURCED the protection of ammunition ships and tankers in New York Harbor to the country where most of the operational planning and financing of the 9/11 attacks occurred.

Okay, I understand.

While we're at it, let's contract out airport security to the UAE, too.

And then why don't we raise taxes and use the money to build a Wahabbist Mosque next to the Capitol and ask Osama if he'd like to be Immam?

Bush is a piece of work.

It seems rather odd, even if there is no danger it won't be good for the publics perception of the Bush regime.
You think the public is paying attention to business deals behind the scenes? This isn't front-page news. This was hiding in a corner somewhere.

Well, I'm not in America so I wouldn't know what type of news get highly prioritized over there. It seems like something that would make a good story to me.

No hate, just being realistic. I knew some of you would get sensitive about this. Tough...this is a war. A war that was brought to us.

Bush needs the money and the Arabs have got it. Arabs have billions of investment in the US if they pulled all their money out, America would be a third world country within a month. You should be thankful for the money of the Arabs in America

I doubt those companies got hands in terrorism.
But there's a greater chance of infiltration. It's just insane to have another country in charge of your Ports...UAE or Denmark, Canada or the UK.

If Bush wanted to throw Hillary a juicy bone he's succeeded. She's fronting a bill to stop the port deal. Bush seems to have no problem selling "democracy" to the Middle East while being completely comfortable with secret committee policy making right here in the ol' USA.

More news:

"U.S. lawmakers said the UAE was an important transfer point for shipments of smuggled nuclear components sent to Iran, North Korea and Libya by a Pakistani scientist, Abdul Qadeer Khan. They also said the UAE was one of only three countries to recognize the now-toppled Taliban as Afghanistan's legitimate government.

The State Department describes the UAE as a vital partner in the fight against terrorism. Dubai's own ports have participated since last year in U.S. efforts to detect illegal shipments of nuclear materials.

Rep. Vito Fossella, R-N.Y., urged congressional hearings on the deal.

"At a time when America is leading the world in the war on terrorism and spending billions of dollars to secure our homeland, we cannot cede control of strategic assets to foreign nations with spotty records on terrorism," Fossella said.

"Outsourcing the operations of our largest ports to a country with a dubious record on terrorism is a homeland security and commerce accident waiting to happen," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. "The administration needs to take another look at this deal."

Separately, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Thursday it will conduct its own review of the deal and urged the government to defend its decision.

In a letter to the Treasury Department, Port Authority chairman Anthony Coscia said the independent review by his agency was necessary "to protect its interests."

The lawmakers pressing the White House to reconsider included Sens. Schumer, Tom Coburn, R-Okla., Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., and Chris Dodd, D-Conn., and Reps. Foley, Fossella and Chris Shays, R-Conn."

I don't disagree really. With his whole "national security" thing, this is certainly stupid. He's building a wall and chops holes in it at the same time. Just to get a buck.

You have to be joking me. There's no way you could actually think the U.S. would have been a third world country within a month. I'm hoping there was some sarcasm that I missed.

Nah - ken and a few other people on here seems to think the civilised western world should bow down to Islam , Muslims and Arab nations ( bearing in mind he lives in the west ) and feel that they are far superior to us western peasants , what he and many others fail to realise is that however great they feel they are if the west leveled the playing field to the level that these terrorists and preachers of hate decided to play at they would be wiped of the map no question . They would be destroyed .

All this bullshit that the west will fall when allah strikes and the west will pay , that the west should be greatfull for Arab nations is total bollocks ,

You act like the west deserves everything it gets from terrorists and that we should be forever in your debt for arab and muslims contribution to the world (as Teek neeks claims) and be thankfull for all your contributions to are societys

The thing is all i see is anarchy here and abroad . The Muslims who are terrorists especialy in the u.k. act outside the law , i would love the police and armed forces to drop to their level and destroy them , however they hide behind civil rights laws , claim benifits and call the nation that pays for their worthless arses a toilet . There is no question that Islam and Muslims would be destroyed if the west wanted to stop all this almighty bullshit , but they will not and worry to much about upseting anyone. I personaly say get tough and kick them out , those who want to live in peace and enjoy a hospitable society whatever religion - great !
If not kick them out , go and live in Iraq or where-ever these so called great Arab nations are . Im sick of all this crap that none of this wouldnt of happened if America hadnt invaded Iraq , Iraq was a hostile nation that invaded other countries for oil just like the Americans and the u.k. etc are acused of , the people lived in a barbaric society where its own people were butchered by its own leader and lived in constant fear and oppresion - great place ! I would love ken or whoever to argue this point - Muslim terrorists use the Iraq issue as an excuse to attack the west fight their cause and kill inocent people and thats the truth , Again please tell me this is otherwise .
Im sure no doubt i will be called a racsist etc but i have a strong point of view on these issues would be interested in anyone arguing against my points , but not just picking out a few they have an answer for and leaving the rest because they dont have one and know dam well im right as i have seen before . Ken and co fire away if you will ....

LOL which points? Aside from this

"Muslim terrorists use the Iraq issue as an excuse to attack the west fight their cause and kill inocent people and thats the truth , Again please tell me this is otherwise ."

you failed to make one single point in that long-ass post, you just stated your opinions on what should be done (nothing wrong with that) and spouted off a little rhetoric in the process.
As for the part of your post which i quoted, I don't know if you noticed but the war in Iraq hasn't been a war on the Iraqi army for a long time now (since there is none), the people involved now are a mix of resisting Iraqis, shi´ites and sunnis. One or more of these groups have taken the war to the homes of the coalition troos (Spain, GB) and while what happened was atrocious, it is stupid to think they just took the war as an excuse to kill westerners. The war is going to have civilian casualties, and if you go to war they are to be expected. That doesn't mean I agree with killing civilians, I just think it naive to go to war and then be shocked when there is a reaction to it in your own country.

In the UAE? I'd like to see where you got that from. You sure you're not getting UAE mixed up with KSA aka Saudi Arabia?
