the meaning of life?

What is the meaning of life?? I know that it's an impossible question to ask and it's one that will never really know but I think that it is something that is really interesting and there are a few good minds on this board and I would like to know peoples opinions on this.

If you are religious or non religious please say what you feel but then please leave it at that, I don't want this thread turning in to an argument like most do between believers and non believers.

I'm gonna start this off. My personal opinion at the moment is that we all have to look at the bigger picture, that the meaning of our life is benift the human race and to improve our race (meaning human as a whole) and situation as much as we can and then to bring our children up to do the same but then for them to take it further like a relay race for example, so then I guess I'm saying that our goal as humans is to reach perfection but when we do what will happen then? i dont know

But if you look through history w are always improving our situation over time so this go some way to back my theory up.

IMO, human beings are not any more special than the next animal. Each animal's uniqueness makes them special but that is where it ends.

I believe that we have no purpose. For anyone who may find this idea hard to comprehend, just think of how much purpose you think there is in the life of a giraffe.

We're born, we contribute to, or detract from (as appears to be the case presenting itself today), nature, we die & all that's left is decaying tissue.

I do accept that there may be a meaning to earth that we have not yet discovered, in which case, I would concede that there is a greater purpose than that which I have stated, depending on our role in this meaning.

I don't think we have a predefined purpose and I don't think that life has a universal "meaning". I think that worries a lot of people, and I think that's one of the attractive features of religion/belief in God.

Well I took the 'meaning of life' to be referring to 'our' (as human beings) purpose in life. As we don't have any predefined purpose I say we have no purpose. What you are saying comes across as you choosing a purpose for your which you may take to be the meaning of your life, but it is by no means the 'meaning of life', unless you believe humans are given life to help one another.

Yes I do kinda think we are here to help one another but also I kinda agree with the predefined thing too, so I'm unsure as to what I actually think.

With all respect to radkin, I dont know if I agree that the meaning of life is to add to the betterment of human existence. I totally get what you are saying, but if that is the purpose, it is complicated and rendered unachievable by the characteristcs that define what make us human - choice and individual desire. For the most part, humans have served only to make live more complicated and destructive for the generations that follow. As comforting as it would be to have a universal purpose for human life, I'd probably bring the scale down and say that you can probably find more meaning in life on the level of the individual.

The meaning of life. This can be broken down into two seperate questions to get a fuller answer

Firstly what is the purpose of mankind and why are we here on earth? U answer this from two different perspectives: scientifically - we are just monkeys with brains so the answer is nothing. religiously - whatever ur faith tells u, serve god, its a test etc etc.

Secondly what is the meaning of our individual lifes, in the context of the whole of mankind throughout the ages and in all that is yet to come? This will be answered by what kind of person u are. Some will seek celebrity and fame, others will be comedians, some are cynical or sceptics, others shy and retiring. It is something that drives all of us however, in many different ways, I think the answer to this question is what we use to make our choices and it fuels our desires.
