Schappelle Corby just got 20 years

I don't really know much about this case as it hasn't been publicized much in the states but 20 years is a small sentence for that amount of drugs here. A guy I went to school with got 25 years for distribution of crack and has to serve 20 of it, and as far as I know from his baby momma, he didn't even get caught with that much.
If she is guilty, then she's really lucky if she only got 20 years. If she was in the states, she probably would've gotten that life sentence.

I don't give two shits about hicks because he trained with the taliban and fought against us, he lost, he was captured sent to prison like all the other scumbags, and thats where he should stay, wait in line for his trial, like the thousand others who are trying to think of excuses as to why they aided the enemy.
How can you have absolutely any idea that he did this? Unless you actually saw him fighting for the Taliban, you shouldn't make such a statement, the Australian media is extremely biased, they don't show everything that happens, especially the television news of 9, 7 and 10. The courts will hopefully decide whether he is guilty or not, and what if he is found not guilty, will you still be so convinced of his guilt like you are now?

Yes that is the difference between the u.s and the rest of the world, the u.s gives u a chance to go out and do the crime again but the rest of the world you speak of does not :D

illmatic/hitemup - Hicks was caught by the northern alliance, he was with the taliban, and has already admitted he's trained with al-quada. I'm sure you all remember the video footage of him training there as well. So him like the rest of the scum will wait their turn.

-- I’m glad amrozi is getting the death penalty, but i was talking about the mastermind who organized and funded the attack, he got 2years, what a joke.

tecky - your a funny man, but like i said, hicks and corbies cases are completely different, but I agree with you about western laws being to lenient. Murderers, pedo's, rapists ect shouldn't be let out after 10 years or whatever so they can go re offend, just a joke.

There's gonna be serious tension between Australia and Indonesia yet again. First it was the whole East Timor debacle, then the Bali bombings and now this.

And yes getting only 2 and a half years jail time for killing 200 people in one case and getting 20years for possession of weed is a joke by anyone's standards. Corby's best chance is to get her lawyers to write a letter to Gueneva and appeal for human rights.

peace.

Hitemup21 is correct in everything that he said.

The way Australia has acted over the past 5 days has been nothing short of disgusting. I have been so appalled by the Australian public's reaction it has actually made me embarrassed. You see, no-one knows whether she is innocent or not, except Shapelle. All this time she could've been guilty as and we would still be protesting, defending, crying for her, carrying on like fucking animals towards the Indonesian judicial system.

There are over 150 Australians in prison cells over the world for similar reasons and 3 in south-east Asia alone convicted for drug charges.. what have we heard about them? Nothing. Shapelle is young, she is attractive, she's a beauty student, she cries every day and we feel sorry for her. This does NOT mean she is innocent.

You have to respect different cultures and how they do things. Australia is a racist fucking country. It makes me so angry that everyday idiots can be so easily swayed by a pretty face crying. And her mother and sister acted completely deranged the other day in court. It made me sick.

I saw an interview with her late last year of when she had been in jail for only a month, and she was completely insincere. She was arrogant, sure of herself that she would be coming home soon. She also subconsciously half-admitted to being naive and stupid, and it sounded to me like the reporter caught her out. Of course, she was quick to say "i didn't do it", but it sounded suspicious to me.

The fact of the matter is, she will get 20 years MINIMUM. That sentence was extremely lenient, and the way Australia has been carrying on is only going to harm her chances. She can still get 30 years, she can still get life, she can still get the death penalty, and this protesting and boycotting isn't going to change ANYTHING.

Fuck this racist, ignorant, ugly side of Australia.

Australian gets 20 years over heroin
By Connie Levett

June 3, 2005

An Australian man has been sentenced to 20 years' jail in Vietnam for trying to smuggle 150 grams of heroin into Australia by post.

Tony Tran, 43, an Australian of Vietnamese descent, was arrested in May last year at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat airport after trying to send the heroin inside laminated photographs, in 15 envelopes, to Australian addresses.

He was caught after a postal officer 500 kilometres north of Ho Chi Minh City became suspicious and reported the packages to police.

Tran pleaded guilty but insisted the packages contained only 75 grams of heroin, mixed with powder.

But the court said the packages contained 150 grams of heroin.

Tran escaped a death sentence, which can be imposed in Vietnam for crimes involving more than 100 grams of heroin. "He was given the lightest sentence," court official Nguyen Van Minh told Deutsche Presse Argentur.

Mr Minh said the court heard Tran and his girlfriend bought the heroin in Ho Chi Minh City and tried to post it in small portions.

Tran's Vietnamese girlfriend, Le Thi Van, 33, was given a 15-year sentence at the two-day trial's conclusion in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.

Court officials said Van's sentence was lower than Tran's because she was involved in smuggling only 40 grams of heroin.

Tran is believed to have no previous criminal record. He was represented at the trial by a private Vietnamese lawyer but an Australian consular officer was present, a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman in Canberra said yesterday.

Tran has 15 days to launch an appeal.

Two other Australians are on death row in Vietnam, convicted of drug offences.
Did anyone see this? Why is this getting absolutely no exposure? Where is the Australian Government's sending of two of its highest QC's pro bono for an appeal?

Keep in mind this happened yesterday! And how many people saw it?

Probably because he plead guilty and admitted to doing it - the only issue in dispute was the amount. Cases like that are open and shut, there is no question of innocence, thus no interest. I definately agree with what you are saying though, this should be on the news - the consequences of drug smuggling need to made clear.... not because it is a sad story of a pretty little girly, but because these our citizens and we need to be aware of what is going on - internally and externally.

I'm really interested though in the truths behind baggage handling practices... Corby's was not the first nor last, I'm sure, to raise the issue. Her case aside, I wonder just what does go on..
