It's just a bit smaller and made from plastic that looks cheaper.
Apart from all that technical details I like the idea of Sony releasing it. By now the release of PS3 slim is probably the best moment to buy a PS3.

Initially I planned to get it but after using the Xbox joypad I simply can't use Ps3's controllers.
They should finally change it or at least create an alternative one. What's even the point of releasing 2 joypads (sixaxis and dual shock) if both look the same and are equally uncomfortable?
I mean okay when I was a kid I found it comfortable and nice but that was years ago and my hands were much smaller. They still are not big but I can barely hold that pad. Using sticks is extremely uncomfortable, same for pressing multiple buttons. I guess it might be okay for smaller, Japanese hands but not for me. If I play a game that uses analog sticks after 45 minutes I can see blisters around my thumbs.

Except that Sony decided to use super-hyper-Nasastyle antihack system which after all those years hasn't been fully cracked.
Xbox360 can be ixtremed and modded in unlimited amounts of ways which is okay since you can for example play backups on your console or install just about anything.
Sure the dowside for Microsof is that it can be pirated but somehow that "pirated" console still manages to bring more gains for them.

if mod your 360 can u still play online or you get banned?
There's a popular software which in fact modifies only the bios of your xbox dvd rom to recognize all disks as originals. There's no other protection there so there's no way to detect any modding. I think it's way better than having a great protection since most people don't do any modding and at least Microsoft doesn't treat its customers like potential criminals in this case.

In Ps3 actually there's a whole system which prevents you from doing basically anything. A whole core of its Cell processor is responsible for keeping you away from it and making it impossible to hack. There's another 'synchronized' chip that protects it so there is literally no way to do anything they don't want you to do.. at least by now. There are ways to somehow overcome it to perform things that original developers of that system didn't think about (like running a game entirely from the hdd may somehow work BUT only with the original disk inside).
There's no way to do things they originally designed the system not to do.

Here's something that some of you might find surprising (especially you 360 fanboys).

PS3 sales soar in UK, Japan - Reports

[UPDATE] Slim console sales increase tenfold in Britain during first week on market; more than 150,000 units sell in Japan in four days, the most since launch.

Though the $299 PlayStation 3 Slim was popping up at US retailers during the last week in August, its impact won't be seen until the NPD Group releases its September game-sales data...in October. However, there is already evidence from overseas that the cheaper, thinner, and higher-memory iteration of the console is selling briskly.

The PS3 Slim is proving popular overseas.

First, UK game-sales data firm Chart-Track has told industry magazine MCV that PlayStation 3 sales have gone up 999 percent for the week of August 31-September 6, the 36th of the year. Though it would not offer specific numbers, the data company, whose official Web site is currently down, did say the PS3 was resoundingly beating its competitors. [UPDATE] Chart-Track has since announced the Slimline console by itself sold 40,000 units in the UK during its first week, not including older, marked-down models.

"The sales increase is very impressive, making the PS3 the top selling hardware in Week 36," a Chart-Track rep told MCV. "The Xbox 360, Wii, and DS Lite all sold around the same amount last week, [while] the PS3 Slim outsold each of them by a ratio of three-to-one." (Emphasis added.)

Meanwhile, halfway around the world in Japan, the PS3 is selling at levels not seen in years. Research firm Enterbrain revealed via its Famitsu magazine that 150,252 PS3s sold in the four days after its September 3 launch. That brought sales of all models of the PS3 to 150,832 units for the August 31-September 6 week, the biggest one-week total since the console went on sale in November 2006.
