Why Arsenal don't want him is beyond me. He's a World Class striker. Benitez doesn't want him because he doesn't want to swallow his pride, United don't want him (it would seem) because they already have two World Class strikers and adequate cover in Saha and Solskjaer (when fit).

Newcastle are not a 'big' club.
*What was the last trophy they lifted? If I'm not mistaken it was the UEFA Cup, 36 years ago.
*They finished 14th last season, winning less than a third of their games and finishing 51 points behind the Champions.
*They've been knocked out of Europe this season at the first hurdle.
*They've started their Premiership campaign with one point from three games and haven't scored a goal in any of them.
*The manager is useless and argumentative, the chairman hates Newcastle and all its fans, and their only star is retiring at the end of the season.

Exactly why should they be considered a 'big' club?

Because of there fanbase, err big means big!! Who said anything about winning trophies

They also have the second or third biggest stadium in england!! err that means in england they are a BIG club!!

I agree with all your points, but all your points have nothing to do with being a big club

i doubt he will go, he is holding out for a move to liverpool by the sounds of it! if i was a newcastle fan i wouldn't want him as he's done that much moaning about it!

So...Man City are a bigger club than Chelsea and Arsenal?

So...Sunderland are a bigger club than Liverpool, Chelsea and (currently) Arsenal?

You need more than fans and a big ground to be a 'big' club. Being a 'big' club is also about success trophies, superstars, European football, international status...those are the things that attract players. If I was Michael Owen, I'd rather play for a club who have a chance of winning a trophy, who are in Europe and who have a good squad of players. The fact that 50,000 Geordies are willing to show up every week to see their team lose isn't much to brag about.

MICHAEL OWEN will not be allowed to rejoin Liverpool on loan.
Real Madrid told Owen he can leave only on a permanent deal after accepting an £18million bid from Newcastle.

That is a shattering blow to his hopes of a dream return to Anfield.

Real want Kop boss Rafa Benitez to match Toon’s bid.

But after he left Liverpool for £8m last year, Benitez is unlikely to pay more than DOUBLE to get Owen back.

Owen, 25, admitted yesterday he is holding out for a Kop bid — although he would be prepared to join Newcastle, but only on loan.

Boss Graeme Souness put a loan deal to Real president Florentino Perez, but it was dismissed.

Geordies chairman Freddy Shepherd’s response to take Owen off Real’s hands on a permanent basis is now the move Perez favours.

The fee would be a club record for Newcastle — topping the £15m they paid Blackburn for Alan Shearer nine years ago.

Owen declared: “I said my ideal situation was to start the season in the Real Madrid team and if not I would prefer to return to Liverpool.

“The Real president understood and said he would try to help me achieve this.

“If the transfer cannot be finalised in time I have agreed to go to Newcastle — but only on a one-year loan.

No but man city are a big club! I did'nt say so and so was bigger than whoever, what i said was newcastle are a big club!!

Same question.

Here i dont give a shit what club owen plays for! If i was him i would'nt sign for newcastle either, that aint what im saying.

What im saying is, if he aint willing to commit to newcastle for 3 or 4 years then they should say fuck you the deal is off!

Ok so in your eyes if dundee united win the spl for the next 10 years, also win the uefa cup, then go on to win the champions league that would mean they are a big club?

No they would'nt they would be a small club with great history.
If they have the quality to win the Champions League and the financial backing, then they are obviously a big club. Who were the last minnows to win the CL?

Yeah but im using them as an example, it aint reality!

If they won the CL with home grown players they would still be little dundee united! with a glorious history.

Obviously which is why it couldn't happen. Only big clubs can win the CL because they're the only one's with the means to do so.
Well do you think newcastle are a big club?

Or do they have to lift the european cup first?

I still kinda hope United will make a late bid for him.
He would be better of like you say joining a big big club! Man u are a big club, but lets be honest they have only won the european cup twice! Forest have also won it twice! He should join a massive club like liverpool, or AC milan, or ajax! you know clubs who have really dominated in europe. :D

If they built a 50,000-seater stadium and sold it out every week, they would still be little dundee united with a bunch of people in the stand.

Newcastle could be considered a 'big' club in the sense that they have the facilites however they are not in the upper echelon like Man U, Real Madrid and as such, Owen would be smart to either go to Anfield or stay at Madrid. A simpler way to put it is, they are a big club in the context of the Premiership but not in the Champions League.

Lol agree with Illumintattile

Only thing 'Big' about Newcastle is that they have a big staduim.

They havent won shit in ages, have no world class players, crap manager and stuggle to finish in the top half of the premiership.

When did they last win a trophy

They are nothing but 50,000 sad geordies crying away another pitiful season.

Newcastle to finish 14th again this year, witout another striker..maybe not even that.
