NEWCASTLE MOVE FOR OWEN

After weeks of speculation and rumour, England star Michael Owen looks set to return to England.

Newcastle have agreed a club record transfer fee with Real Madrid for the unsettled striker.

The move could be a big boost for England's World Cup hopes.

The 25-year-old had dropped down the pecking order at Real and was in danger of missing valuable first team experience.

United's current record fee stands at the £15m paid for Alan Shearer in 1996.

"Newcastle United have met Real Madrid's asking price and conditions," the club said on its website.

"The agreed fee will be a record transfer fee for Newcastle United. It is now up to the player and his adviser."

Owen made it plain his first wish was to return to Liverpool.

But he declared himself willing to spend a season on loan at St James' Park if his preferred option failed to materialise.

He said: "I said that my ideal situation was to start the season in the Real Madrid team. If not, I would prefer to return to Liverpool.

"If the transfer cannot be finalised in time, I have agreed to go to Newcastle United, but only on a one-year loan. I need to be playing regularly in World Cup year."

I still kinda hope United will make a late bid for him. He might prefer to spend a season at Newcastle, though, since he'll walk into their team.
I was hoping that too *crosses fingers*

Newcastle havent won shit in like 60 years.

Owen joining a team with no striking talent (bar Shearer) who is in his last legs..

Surprised big teams haven't come in for him.

Newcastle are a big club only in the minds of the supporters. They got pimp slapped by Bolton today. They need Owen far more than he needs them.

Getting Owen on a season loan would be better than nothing, but it's not a real solution to their problem. If Owen came on loan, then at the end of the season Newcastle would be left without Owen AND without Shearer. The best they could hope for was Owen coming on loan, Newcastle pulling out all the stops and having a great season, qualifying for Champ's League/UEFA Cup and then Owen deciding to stay.

What the fuck has winning anything got to do with the size of the club?

I know there a shit team, i know they aint gonna win anything, that has nothing to do with the fact that that they are a big club!

Do you see anyother big clubs wanting him?

Yeah right, why then aint he got the other big clubs chasing him.
Why Arsenal don't want him is beyond me. He's a World Class striker. Benitez doesn't want him because he doesn't want to swallow his pride, United don't want him (it would seem) because they already have two World Class strikers and adequate cover in Saha and Solskjaer (when fit).

Newcastle are not a 'big' club.
*What was the last trophy they lifted? If I'm not mistaken it was the UEFA Cup, 36 years ago.
*They finished 14th last season, winning less than a third of their games and finishing 51 points behind the Champions.
*They've been knocked out of Europe this season at the first hurdle.
*They've started their Premiership campaign with one point from three games and haven't scored a goal in any of them.
*The manager is useless and argumentative, the chairman hates Newcastle and all its fans, and their only star is retiring at the end of the season.

Exactly why should they be considered a 'big' club?
