Oh Shit World War Three Is About To Start

besides, most likely they are doing a north-korean-chopstick-double bluff.
thats their culture, because they dont wanna be hurt in their pride.

i remember this interview with the minister of foreign affairs of north korea and he said (quote):
"America hasn't got any advanced technology at all, we have missles prepared and aimed on every american city, chicago, los angelas, sacramento, washington, new york (..) and they will reach america within 5 minutes. The american technology is so outdated that they can't even find our missles. They don't even see our programs."

i find this hard to believe, ... i know they might have an A-Bomb or at least SOME "ingrediants" to create one- but they ain't gonna use it.

^^ that doesnt make sense. if they wanna unite it- be part of their own country, they not gonna destroy it (cuz now in those parts in japan and ukrain its still not healty to walk there)

it makes perfect sense, they'd attack military outposts with nukes and invade the country. American forces are stationed in specific areas in the country, and they're the only reason NK won't invade.

who is the US to tell who can and who can't have nuclear weapons??? That ridiculous. We have the most nuclear weapons in the world. I supprot Korea in defending themselves cause America keeps invading all these countries. I feel like the US's days as the most powerful nation on Earth are numbered.

wasn't it generally assumed that n. korea did not actually have nuclear power rather they were looking for economic consessions in order to stop the program they never really were devolping. as far as all of this- this is the reason that i have a distaste( i really actually hate the bush administation but i never get to use the word distaste) is that seem not to know the meaning of subtlty. they are pushin harder and harder to achieve their own agenda that they are provoking a more drastic approach from other countries ie this story iran etc

I think North Korea is one of the biggest threats to the world, and I cant understand how Iraq was more important than North Korea. The human rights violations is on such a large scale and then you have the weapons I'm sure they have. I saw a documentary about North Korea some time ago that actually went inside the country and interviewed some soldiers and documented what happened on a daily basis. The television plays recordings of the President making speaches (propoganda) which everyone must watch everyday and theres billboards around the place that spreads more of the same. But what really shocked me and made me mad was the prison camps - Interviews from former gaurds at the prisons and former prisoners, that managed to escape, themselves told of what happened there. One lady was tortured by pouring crazy amounts of water in her mouth and a wooden board being placed across her body and when the gaurd stood on her water came out of every hole in her body. Another person was made to stand in waist deep water for 24 hours and when collapsed was still forced to stand. But the worst of all a woman who was forced to feed 10 women lettuce that had been dipped in biological toxic shit, she said by the time she got half way down the line the first lot of women where screaming for help and blood coming out of their eyes and ears. And a family (women and children) being exposed to a room full of biological weapons where the gaurds stood and laughed. This is what they do to people who are suspected of being traitors or spy's for other countries, I think its the 4 Generation rule. It's a horrible country and something must be done, I dont know what or how but they have been let off for too long.

artisticgurl, have you heard about the torture methods used by the US in Guantanamo, im sure what happened their was against human rights, or is the US allowed to do that shit themselves on one hand, and on the other hand invade anyone else who partakes in it.

No I completely disagree with Guantanamo Bay, I think if the US cant hold them on US soil they shouldnt be held at all. And that the torture techniques are disgraceful, I'm sure its something thats coming from the top down not the other way. Trust me I completely disagree with that too.
I think thats the problem, the American Government are hypocrits. But there are plenty of other countries in the world.

What about N. Korea's sale of ballistic missile technology to other countries, including Iran and Syria? Is that in self defense? Will they be selling them nukes too?

By the way, this seems to be a news story every year:

Everyone forgot about it for a year, and now it's a revelation again.
did you forget that the US gave north korea the capeabilities to make 65+ nukes a year in 1994

maybe not such a good move now that they want to nuke your ass

A congressional report says, "The U.S.-funded light water reactors in North Korea will accumulate plutonium in spent fuel at the rate of about 17,300 ounces per year, enough to produce 65 nuclear bombs a year."

america's the reason why north korea is fukked up- they cut electricity- they came with the war, split korea in 2... its only logical that N-Korea hates the US
Without that war, there still would have been a unified Korea. But, it would have its capital in Pyongyang, as opposed to Seoul, meaning that North Korea, as we know it today, would have been dominated all of Korea. Therefore, it's good that America intervened, to at least salvage today's South Korea.

why? just because AMERICA thinks communism is bad?
there could have been developed a good form of it for the entire country, not one isolated, based on hate and one leader as it is now cuz of the war. same thing goes for vietnam... they are still communists now cuz america couldnt win that war either. they WANT to rule their country like that.

"North Korea on Thursday announced for the first time that it has nuclear weapons and rejected moves to restart disarmament talks any time soon, saying it needs the weapons as protection against an increasingly hostile United States."

Pyongyang had "manufactured nukes for self-defence" and would take "a measure to bolster its nuclear weapons arsenal" in order to "protect its ideology, system, freedom and democracy".
Oh man, that's what I've been saying all along (just check out the big bad US thread). In terms of realist international theory, North Korea has acted in an entirely predictable and rational manner. I dunno if you guys remember the streethop article I wrote from 2003, but NK was willing and prepared to join the US in the fight against terrorism.....until, however, they were "slapped in the face" by being labelled as a part of the "axis of evil"... and with Iraq as precedent, is it any wonder that NK has taken measures to ensure their own security? It's like a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario. I am not suggesting that the restarting of their nuclear program is a good thing, merely that, in light of the hostility emanating from the US, it is no surprise that they would seek weapons for self-defence and as a deterrent (its textbook reactionary policy).

Human rights violations fall under the jurisdiction of the UN, so does nuclear proliferation (well the realm of international law really). I've said before, and I will say it again, what everyone seems to miss is that the US, despite the power it holds in the international arena, does not have the authority or the right to step in and take control of such issues. Just because something is wrong, does not give anyone the right to take matters into their own hands. International politics is still made up of "nation states" and with this we must adhere the most fundamental of concepts - sovereignty. We cannot interfere merely because morality tells us to, we have to utilise the accepted and legitimised methods. This is the essence of international law and if we are to have peace, we need to understand and accept this as authority.

You say something must be done to stop these HR violations, I agree wholeheartedly. The unilateral approach to international affairs that the US embarks upon, however, prevents any affective measures to resolve these violations, as it undermines and thus, weakens the authority of the UN. If we are trully concerned about human rights (and don't be fooled, this is hardly ever on the agenda in regards to foreign policy) then a collaborative effort needs to be undertaken, once again, using the right procedure.
