Is Wrestling really a sport?

It got me thinking. American Wrestling, can one really say this is a sport?

Personally, I say no. Nothing but respect for the wrestlers themselves. They are athletes and actors and it requires a great deal of skill what they do. But what totally puts me off wrestling is the lack of competition.

It's all fixed. It's a show, it's not a fight, or a battle or strife or war. It's all set up.

And I think that sport definitely requires an element of competition to be qualified as sports. All sports have some element of battle in the, is it against the opponent or against the clock or both.

Wrestling has none. It is pure entertainment, but not a sport.

Thoughts?

It's poop.

But each to their own.

You need a good level of fitness... Does that count as a sport? I guess not. Snooker and Darts are sports and they don't. And keep-fit isn't a sport. :)

Yes, but at least those involve honest competition. Well, except cheerleading I guess. Is there competitive cheerleading in the States?

I agree that stuff like darts, pool and chess is kind of different from traditional sports, since you couldn't really call a darter or bowler an "athlete". But they are still a sport in the sense of a contest of physical skill (whether it's throwing a tiny dart in a small area or running a marathon) and/or mental capacity (such as chess, but many sports require you to "read" the play or some such. Teamsports especially) between two or more contenders.

A sport is you versus the other guy. Or your team versus their team. And the contenders are the ones to decide who wins or loses. Not the management.

Like I said, no bad word about the wrestlers themselves. They are immensely fit guys who are also good at putting up a spectacle. But they aren't "really" fighting in that ring...

Well if you want competition, there's boxing and MMA and amateur wrestling. Problem is, none of them are particularly interesting to watch. You might as well go to a club on a Friday night and wait for a fight to break out.

Pro Wrestling is a sport. Wrestlers are always competing against each other to become the best and eventually become world champion or climb to the top. How do you become the world champion? You must prove yourself with your skill and athletic ability. Although the outcome of a match is fixed, your performance in that match plays a big role in determining the outcome of your next matches. Management doesn't pull out the name of the wrestler who will win the match out of their asses. Also, even though the outcome of a match might be fixed, the match itself is not. All the moves are not fake. Being hit with a chair and having your skull cracked wide open is not fake. To say pro wrestling is not a sport is ignorant.

No it is not, it’s all choreographed to a story (plot). I mean the ring is set up for them to take less impact when they get slammed etc, if u ever notice when they use tables they throw them through the middle of it..can't imagine why. But no it is not a sport, its entertainment

I already elaborated that the wrestlers themselves are not to blame for it. And I agree that there is competition in trying to put on the best show, but that's like second-line competition. Like tennis players vying for #1 spot or footy teams aiming for a certain league position. But the direct competition, on the field, pitch, ring, that's what matters. And that's what is absent in wrestling.

Hey, if you're entertained by men in tights, by all means go ahead and enjoy. :D
