How many of you care what other people think?

Yeah I care. Like most people have said, family are most important but I do also care what some others say.

In the respect thread I said that I want a certain level of respect from everyone because I think that there's a basic level of respect everyone should afford each other (with rare exceptions ie. pedophiles, rapists).

I don't think my actions are hindered too much by caring about what others think because I will say whatever I want & act how I want, & then if someone has a problem with it I 'care' enough to see what was up with what I said/did.

I think everybody cares to a certain extent.

On this topic, I'd like to ask how often have you seen someone's behaviour patterns change when in certain company? (be that those they're attracted to or someone with a position of authority etc.)

Everyone does, whether they care to admit it or not. Some people depend on the approval of others more than most. It's really not that important, but everyone desires some level of acceptance and respect.
:thumb: if we didnt care, why do we buy the new clothes when we havent outgrown our old ones, sporty cars when you need to transport your family, and when a guy's spittin game on a girl, why's he sound so self-confident? You are what others make you out to be.

I care about what my family and friends think as they are the ones who know me thoroughly and it is their opinions which count - they are the ones who look out for u and want the best for you. Also, my lecturers- because if i dont listen to them, i wont pass my degree!

Anyone else- i really dont give a shit. There's a lot of haters out there, and loads of peeps that dont like me- but the only thing they can do is spread rumours.
My theory- any1 that listens to the rumours without getting to know you, is not worth it.

Perhaps to make yourself feel good about yourself, and if u got enough money to buy a sports car, than why not?? What's the point in slaving to earn money and not spend it?

However, symbollic interactionsm states that we do act a certian way so that others can perceive us in that way. Does this mean our actions are not a true image of ourselves? And how can u act all the time??

But why do we feel better about ourselves if we have an overpriced car?

If you took someone completely removed from society and gave them a choice of an iPod or another HD mp3 player which did the exact same things but was cheaper, he'd pick the latter. Most people in society wouldn't (and indeed don't). It's all about building up a self-image which, at the end of the day, is for everyone else.

But not everyone is like that- tho the majority is. Iv got a mate who has to put watever clothes he can together- no matching outfits, no latest Levi jeans or nothing, and he don't give a shit about what other people think of him. His theory, is why become a victim for these big name retial shops who exploit children for the production to earn money? - so he doesn't like to buy highstreet fashion. Like i said, if people judge you based on rumours (or appearance), they aint worth knowing!

right. like recently, I bought a cell phone and got a tracfone since it was cheaper. But I've seen plenty of others buyin more expensive flip/camera phones with terrible reception, even though they don't even take pics w/ it! That's materialistic, and that's society.

Everyone who says he/she doesn't care what others think is a straight up liar. Even being self-confident is related to what others think. If you're self-confident, you have faith in that the way others percieve you will be positive.

If a person wouldn't care about what others think that person couldn't function in society at all.

I don't care what people think about me to the extent that I won't let it change who I am or what I believe. I don't care how ill-taken my opinions or words may be. If I believe it, I'll say it.

The only people that I care about what they think of me are the ones I care about. I have no reason to live up to anyone else's expectations.

Although I said I do care (& I stand by that) when I see materialism getting brought up I've got to say that applies to me to but to a small degree.

I admit, I am tight with money. I prefer to save than impulse-buy & as a result I rarely purchase objects of financial significance.

Mobile phones? Too expensive. If you want to talk to me, phone my house or come & find me.

CDs? I can download that shit for free.

DVDs? I'll get a bootleg before it's even out in the cinema. Like I give a fuck for director's commentary.

Clothes? Hit the January sales with a vengeance.

Books? This is an expense I can spare.

I'd also use this internet connection as an example of money I don't mind spending.

But as for 'getting the latest thing'? Fuck that, I'll buy what I like, when I like & the only person who can convince me otherwise is a female. When involved with a girl, I will spend money on her, but only if I see a future in it. All these dumb motherfuckers dating a girl for three weeks over Christmas & New Years & they clearing their funds out!

I don't care if you think I'm tight - because I am.

When it comes to a principle (if you can get it for free, fuck paying) couldn't give a fuck what people think.

It all depends on the moment. For instance, right now, I am so depressed and exhausted that I could give a fuck what ANYONE thinks of me. But, for example, If I was really happy and having fun, I would be bothered by someone throwing dirt on my name.

I think everyone cares a bit - it's human nature to worry about what people think as in ancient times if you upset or offended people you'd be excluded from the group and die.

However, you need to find a balance and not let worrying about other people's opinions make you socially awkward.

My friend runs a website which contains articles about developing a more 'I don't care' attitude and successfully meeting women, and it's worth a look for anyone interested in that kind of stuff.

http://www.growyourgame.com/article...e-confident-and-genuine-in-social-situations/

Bit of shameless friend-promotion there but it's worth a look.
