* The protagonist's name is Niko Bellic - an Eastern European immigrant who has come to Liberty City to live the "American Dream." The game is set in Liberty City in 2007, but it is bigger than the Liberty City we saw in GTA III.

* The GTA 4 equivalent of the Statue of Liberty is called the Statue of Happiness, and DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is known as BOABO (Beneath the Offramp of the Algonquin Bridge Overpass).

Game Informer
* In Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar have recreated 4 of the 5 boroughs in New York, as well as part of New Jersey. Broker is the GTA IV equivalent of Brooklyn, Manhattan is now called Algonquin, Queens is now Dukes, the Bronx is Bohan, and New Jersey is Alderney. The map is smaller than San Andreas, but considerably more detailed. No countryside or desert, we are led to believe.

* Pedestrians are far more realistic in GTAIV than in previous GTA games - they sit on benches, smoke cigarettes, read books and generally act like any real pedestrian would in the middle of a street.

* The screenshots in the preview are not representative of the final quality of the graphics, Rockstar insist. The game will only look better as the release draws closer..

* Niko was persuaded to move to Liberty City by his cousin Roman, who claimed to be living a wonderful life there with two beautiful women, fifteen sports cars, and lots of money etc, but he was infact telling a lie in order to hide his own failures. Roman is the only person you know in Liberty City at the beginning of the game, and he becomes one of your major connections at the start. Niko is a tough character whereas Roman is friendly. Roman is heavily in debt and a lot of people are after him - he needs Niko's support. They are constantly bickering.

* The demo (which was played on Xbox 360) begins with Bellic standing inside of the taxi depot, which Roman operates in the borough of Broker in a converted industrial garage. Roman works at a cluttered desk in a shabby environment, and at this point the graphical improvements are extremely evident. Bellic walks to a brownstone house in Broker, where he pushes open the door and pulls out a pistol. The living room however, is not occupied. He then moves onto the kitchen, which he also finds to be empty. He pushes his way through the back door and smashes the window of a red four-door car using his elbow. The broken glass falls onto the street and onto the seat of the car, as Bellic unlocks it from the inside. He hotwires the car and sets off to his next destination. The camera angle behind the car is closer to the vehicle than in previous GTA titles, which enables more detail on the car to be seen. After selecting a radio station, Bellic navigates to a section of the BOABO arriving at a dockside with a terrific view of the city skyline. Pigeons can be heard in the sky, and waves can be heard rustling in the water. Bellic then pulls out his cellphone which has options for Phonebook, Messages, Organizer and Camera on it's LCD screen. He selects Phonebook, and he is then presented with another set of options: City Contact, Docks Friend, and Cab Contact. After a brief conversation he informs the reciever to meet him at the docks.

* As Bellic walks, you can feel the weight behind each step he makes. Variations in the terrain cause realistic changes in the walking animation. The physics have also improved and character movements are more realistic.

* In previous GTA games you were like a slave because you had to constantly take orders from people when doing missions. There is still an element of that in Grand Theft Auto 4, but you can also choose how you want to spend your time, for example "I want to hang out with him and her. I want to hang out with this guy because he always has fun things to do." Call him up and maybe you can hang with him. Maybe he'll answer. You have a lot of choice over what you want to do.

* In GTA 4, Rockstar is giving its players more freedom, more choice, and more sense of control over their destiny - the structure of GTA4's storyline is quite different to it's predecessors as it can be told in a number of different ways. You can talk to people in person, by cell phones, and there are a bunch of other ways of giving the player information. In general it's a different experience, with new ways of interacting with the characters and the game world.

* Rockstar consulted crime experts and ex-policemen when making the game, and they learned that being a criminal is a lot harder these days than it was during the 80s and 90s (for example) and they have tried to reflect this in the game. This means you can expect to see a lot of people getting arrested - the police are a heavy presence in Liberty City.

* There are no planes in GTA IV because there is only one city, and Rockstar want the game to seem realistic. That means there will be no rollerblades, no unicycles, probably no jetpacks and indeed no planes. Rockstar are giving choice and variety which feels right for the character. However there will be motorbikes.

* Rockstar North is approaching the recruitment of voice actors in a different way. This means that we will probably hear less familiar voices in GTA 4, as R* are looking for voices which suit the attitude of the characters, and are not just looking for big names. A similar approach is being done with the soundtrack - Rockstar are looking for great music which works with the 2007 Liberty City.

* After an initial load sequence, the game will never load again. Not even during exterior-interior transitions (and vice versa).

* GTA IV will have multiplayer, but it's not going to be a massively multiplayer online game, says Dan Houser. They are trying to make something that is interesting, fun, progressive and which goes along nicely with the single-player game.

The journalists of the PSM magazine have played GTA IV during 4 hours for 7 missions. Here there impressions, the mag officialy comes out on february 25th.

- The first hands-on minutes of the game are enough to understand how the game is gonna kick ass.
- The city have a lot of streets of any genre.
- You cannot enter in all the buildings, but you can interact with most of them.
- No property gestion, neither gang gestion nor trade gestion.
- Instead of that, we'll have bowling, dart games, drinking spree in pub, strip-club and night club.
- The core of GTA IV is all about the human relationship.
- Sometimes, your contacts may call you during hard mission to ask you a service, you choose between the mission or your contact.
- If you do sh*t with your contact, you may assume the consequences.
- The impression of a breathing city is, again, absolutely stunning.
- The density of the population (peds) change between the place/borough you are.
- If you walk around the street with a gun in your hand, peds who have a cellphone can call the police.
- While we tried to high-jack a car, the scared bastard go so fast that he hit 2 cars.
- During the first mission, we tried to high jack a car without gun, then the driver beat up Niko, who finished at the hospital.
- Peds react in a very realistic way, like they lead their own life.
- We played seven missions during four hours, the devs tell us that it's a very very small portion of the game.
- 15 minutes necessary to go through 2/3 of Manhattan with a boat, and 10 minutes by car to do Brooklyn/Central Park.
- The cars can be destroyed very realisticly, every parts can fold, it's stunning!
- More variety of missions, and hard.
- The game is done, clipping has gone, and the game is super smooth.
- Forget about every other gta-like that tried to compete GTA IV, that game kick ass.
- If you press the jump bouton, niko can climb everywhere, you can also move straft left or right while you're hung at something (Assassin's creed style).
- There is swimming club.
- If you have 5 stars, it's very difficult to escape from the cops, they are everywhere and they don't joke with you and this time, they are really clever.
- While boast trip, the sfx are awsome, you can hear the sound of the waves that beat the cockle of the boat, wonderful!
- With powerful weapons, you can shoot through the walls.
- The weather : we've seen fog, rain, sun, clouds, variety of colours depend of what time it is, soo beautiful.
- This time around, for the first time in a gta, if you die you go to the hospital and you paye $100, but you keep all of your weapons.
- But if we go to jail, we must pay a lot more and we no more have our weapons .
- While you are drunk, it's very difficult to control Niko, the drunk sensation is perfectly done.
- When we steal a car to a ped, he can hung his car and they are gliding on the road (like a sh*t lol).
- When we make a crime, choppers arrive with searchlights to follow you through the city.
- We've seen some strip tease in a prositute club, by paying the chicks.
- after a big crash on the freeway, Niko get ejected through the window and he lost some health.
- Depend on wich bourogh you are, peds speak different language if they are Italian, Chinese, or Bronx dude.
- Healthkits are available only in the buildings.
- Grenades and cocktail molotov's sfx and effects are really stunning!

Thanx a lot for tha info PaulyPac. Hope you can find some more and post it. This is all I have to hold me out til April 29. Though I'm a college student, I've played San Andreas and beat it more times than I can count on my 10 fingers just waiting on GTA 4 to release. All my favorite games got pushed back though. Grand Theft Auto 4, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Smash Bros Brawl.

But man, I can't wait for this shit release. Music on cellphones, relationships, NaturalMotion features, guns and cars, police AI, ped AI, new missions, recreated city, the internet. This Liberty City is definately gonna keep me hibernating this summer. What if they recreated Miami and Los Angelos again. I think I'd give up on life probably and just play these games.

Shit...I feel like a 10 year old kid waiting on Christmas

Grand Theft Auto IV is featured in this month's issue of Level in Sweden. The magazine isn't coming out until Monday, but a fan of PlanetGTA named Max managed to obtain a copy today and send me the details immediately. The preview took place in London in January and lasted three hours. It's the Xbox 360 version that was previewed.

Brucie is located in the Broker docks in an abandoned warehouse. He pays Niko to kill a specific person. Niko goes to the targets house, but somehow the target manages to escape through a back door. After a long car chase, Niko does a drive-by on the target who tried to escape on foot. When Brucie calls after the assassination, he screams: "You're the man!"

Keeping friends is very important. If Niko shows up on time for meetings, run errands and help his friends, he will get taxi service (what this means is not explained), a free helicopter and guns delivered to his home. If you can't make it to a meeting, you should call whomever you where supposed to meet, and tell that person you won't be able to meet him or her just now.

Enemy health is indicated by a circle above the head.

The massive weight of a car is something you really feel. Cars behave much more realistic than in previous games.

There is a car named Contender.

There is a place where you can rent helicopters. When Niko gets there, a man in a yellow jacket approaches him, and asks if he wants to view the city from above. Instead of replying nicely, Niko blows the guys brains out, and steals a helicopter. The Rockstar Games representatives told the previewer the following: "Congratulations! You're the first of all journalists to fly a helicopter in GTA IV! We actually never thought that any of you would come up with the idea to do that!"

According to the previewer, you can fly the helicopter very high above Liberty City.

The last thing the previewer did was to land the helicopter on top of the GetaLife building, stand on the 'G' in GetaLife, and snipe people on the ground.
Thank you very much Max for these new details from Level.

i don't know, i know the ps2 was supposedly hard to code for, but Rockstar never had any issues with it. but Dan Houser says it's the 360 this time that is causing issues. if i can find the article where he says this i'll post it.

edit: here's the article http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/785/785342p1.html

"Houser says the lack of a guaranteed hard drive and the smaller storage space of the DVD format is limiting the game's progress. In contrast, all PS3s have a built-in hard drive and the console's Blu-Ray format can hold about five times as much content as DVD."
Is this true? Is it because of xBOX I had to wait extra months?!

Can't wait to see the soundtrack list, there's supposed be so many songs on 4

I loved the songs on San Andreas

Radio-X was my fav :D
I kept mines on either Bounce, Radio Los Santos or the talk show. But my favorite GTA radio was Vice City's. I'm into that old stuff.

But on GTA4, I hope they don't have that shit hop thats out nowadays. I hope they have an oldschool station that fits my taste. And is there an option on 4 where I can create my own custom list from the songs I have on my PS3 like they do with XBox?
